CD Review: Bill Cosby: “…Far From Finished”

Today a new Bill Cosby stand-up television special, his first in approximately thirty years, was released on DVD and Blu-ray. It’s titled …Far From Finished, and I reviewed the DVD here on Pop Culture Beast (you can read my review here). In the DVD’s special features, Bill Cosby is interviewed by the special’s director, Robert Townsend, and in that interview he talks about a bit titled “Bernadette.” That bit is not included on the DVD. It is, however, included as a bonus track on the CD version.

The DVD is 95 minutes, plus bonus material, including that 49-minute interview. The CD is a two-disc set, totaling approximately 133 minutes. That’s quite a lot of extra comedy, and a reason to want to own both the DVD and CD versions of this special.  Please read my DVD review for information on the rest of the material, as I will just focus on the CD’s bonus tracks here.

The first of the two bonus tracks is the aforementioned “Bernadette.” This is a wonderful 23-minute story about a girl, who as Bill says, was fine. “Everybody wished they could go steady with Bernadette.” And he approached her when he learned she had a certain interest in jazz.

He talks about putting on a lot of cologne before the date, and getting into the bathtub. “Because I’m sixteen years old, and sixteen-year-old boys have two things going for them – hope and stupidity.” Bill Cosby is such a great storyteller, and part of his charm is his delivery of these perfectly crafted and yet somehow simple statements, like that line about sixteen-year-old boys.

And his voice when describing how Bernadette held his hand is bloody hilarious.

The second bonus track, “Otis,” is another tale from when Bill Cosby’s youth. It’s about his grandfather telling him how Otis was born out of wedlock, and so doesn’t want Bill playing with him anymore, and about Bill asking his mom exactly what that means. That leads to a great misunderstanding, and is funny in the way that only Bill Cosby can make it funny.
