The Path of the Beam

It has been annouced that JJ Abrams has optioned the rights to the greatest fantasy series ever: "The Dark Tower" by Stephen King. This could mean us Dark Tower geeks will get the movie event of our lives ala "Lord of the Rings".

It's a touchy subject tough adaptaion to be sure. 7 books packed full of dimension crossing, magic, guns, sex, demons, wizards, gunslingers, and a journey to the Tower that does not have aperfect hollywood ending. It will be a difficult job, and we probably won't see it for a while. More difficult still? Casting this monster. We all have our wishes and desires as to who should play the central characters of. So here is my cast wishes for the core of the Dark Tower movies:

Roland's Ka Tet

Eddie Dean

Joseph Gordon Levitt

Detta Walker/Odetta Holmes/Susannah Dean

Rosario Dawson

Jake Chambers

Cameron Bright

and finally...the big enchilada. Roland, the Last Gunslinger. Roland, Son of Steven.

Roland Deschain

The Gunslinger

Sean Bean

This is just the main cast. There are so many other people to cast in this film. It's exciting to know we're getting something be it TV or Film and that JJ Abrams, a great talent, is involved.

What are your thoughts?
Ka is a wheel, Thankee Sai.

  1. granted i've only read the first 3.5 books but i wish they'd just leave it alone or make an animated series.
i do like your choice for roland, though.

  2. Totally agree about Cameron Bright - I saw Godsend around the same time I happened to be reading The Waste Lands, and he immediately reminded me of Jake. It's uncanny, like it's the role he was born to play.

  3. Wow. I found your blog by google searching "Roland Deschain". But you're like dead on for your casting choices. Rosario Dawson would make a kick a$$ Susannah, and though I've never seen the other three actors you've chosen before, I agree with you 100%. :]

  4. I think the best person to play Roland is Christian Bale.

  5. Eh. I laughed when i saw who might play Eddie. I definetly pictured him as a more bulkier type, not a scrawny guy.. The kid that might play jake looks the role, but hes also really young. Unless thats an old picture. I like the person who is gonna play Susannah. The guy that might play Roland tooks pretty good, but it'll be a tough role to play

  6. Well these aren't official castings. It's just who I think will be best for the roles. Purely speculative. As far as I am aware, there hasn't been any casting yet.

  7. Hey there, I was googling 'roland deschain' too, and your casting picks are awesome. I never thought I'd see anyone else suggest Levitt for Eddie, but he has been my pick for the role ever since I heard the news. I was picturing Viggo Mortensen as Roland, but Sean Bean (another LOTR alumnus) looks great for the role too. I only hope JJ Abrams does justice to *all* the books and doesn't try to squeeze everything into one mini series in some kind of unholy amalgamation

  8. i'm only half way through book 2, but loving the series. I've been imagining Christian Bale as Roland for the last couple of pages though - just look at his roles in say the Machinist and Rescue Dawn - he'd be amazing. Killer accents etc. Joseph Gordon Levitt as Eddie though is perfect - hadn't been able to pitch an actor in that role before.

  9. I think your casting choices for Eddie and Roland are spot on. To respond to Deadly White, Eddie DOES bulk up later in the series, but when Roland draws him, he is a scrawny 21 year-old strung out on H. JGL would be an excellent Eddie, as would Sean Bean be an excellent Roland. Although while reading the books, I've wondered what sort of accent Roland has. I imagine it's just an American non-regional accent, which I'd be willing to bet Sean Bean can do. Viggo would be another good candidate, although hasn't he already filled his hero quest quota for this decade with LoTR?
I love Cameron Bright as Jake, but I fear he will be too old by the time production for this movie rolls around. You gotta remember Jake's only 11 when he meets Roland at the Waystation, and at most, 13 when they reach Blue Heaven. However, they do mention many times (indirectly) that Jake looks less and less like a child every day, so who knows how old his character actor should be? Casting his part will be tricky indeed. I'm not crazy about Rosario for Susannah, but what do you think about Sophie Okonedo (http://www.mahoganycafe.com/sophieokonedo.html)? Okay, that's enough rambling for today.

  10. Sophie Okonedo is a great choice for Susannah! I hadn't even thought of her. Nice suggestion.
