It's hard to believe that it's been fifteen years since the release of Stargate. That's half my lifetime. I still have fond memories of the film and revisiting it these years later reinforced them.
Stargate is the unlikely film that has since launched a massive and much loved franchise. One that I do not follow. My knowledge of it begins and ends with this, the original film.
The 15th Anniversary set is loaded with special features including many brand new ones, including a pretty funny gag real. You also get both versions of the film.
On Blu-ray, the film looks stunning. The 1080p picture is gorgeous and the sound is spot on. Stargate holds up remarkably well. It really is a fun and exciting film that is one of Devlin/Emmerich's best.
The acting is great, the action is stellar. It has a strong story and some great direction.
It seems like movies like Stargate are just not made anymore. In fact the Sci-Fi genre seems to be lagging pretty severely in terms of films, with the exception of the recent Star Trek reboot and District 9, I'm hard-pressed to even think of another Sci-Fi film that came out this year.
Stargate is definitely worth revisiting even if you aren't a fan of the gigantic franchise it has spawned. It's presented perfectly on Blu-ray and makes for a welcome edition to your film collection.
