Let The Right One In

Tired of the same old vampire stories? If Let The Right One In is at a theatre near you, it's definitely not to be missed, and won't disappoint. On limited release in the US, the Swedish film is based on the novel by the same name, penned by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Its an eerie, unconventional vampire story about a bullied little boy who finds out his neighbor is a vampire. The novel answers some of your more typical vampire questions in ways that defy the usual cliches. A tale with few cut-and-dry 'good' or 'bad' characters, it works its way under your skin and leaves a chill in its wake. An outstanding read, and from all accounts, an outstanding film.

Lindqvist's characters are multi-dimensional wonders that speak well to the coldness of humanity--most of his humans are more brutal than the vampire. From cruel boys willing to murder for mere insult-- to a child predator who protects and hunts for a predator in a child's form, the meeting of two souls in this stark and grotesque environment certainly leaves an impression.

I was captivated in a way few horror novels catch my fancy anymore. Clever, beautiful, and worth picking up. The film is getting excellent reviews as well, if you are fortunate enough to have it playing near you (unlike myself), definately a must see.
