CBS’s new murder/mystery drama premiered tonight with what looks to be an interesting enough premise. Dubbed as the “Scream meets Agatha Cristie” TV show to watch this spring it already has enough to live up to, but will it be able to meet expectations that set it so high.
Click the Rawr! for a full review of the premiere. (Warning! Some spoilers a head!)
To start off the night we are shown a rather lavish party being held on the boat for a soon to be bride and groom (Trish and Henry). We get to meet many of the players in the whole saga, including the groom’s Uncle Marty, the bride’s apparently super weather father, and the groom’s best friend and former Harper’s Island resident Abby. It’s at this point that we also learn that Abby’s mother was one of the victims of the horrible set of murders that occurred on the island 7 years ago. A point that is constantly made through out the entire episode as though it is important, even though they never really delve into it enough to say why, (I guess that’s why we must keep watching). I must give the show some credit, while most dramas enjoy building the suspense in the first act we were treated to the first murder; an unfortunate chap, who was tied to the propeller of the boat and met his end the moment the boat started heading for the island.
Once on the Island the preparations for the wedding start. It’s not with out some drunken dancing and flirting, most disturbingly from Henry’s Uncle Marty, who was seen doing a little bit of dirty dancing with someone who doesn’t look much older than 14.
Not much else of any consequence happens except little bits of drama meant to distract us from the murderer that is apparently wandering about. It comes full circle though with murder number 2 in the last 5 minutes of the show.
The show followed a pretty standard slasher flick set up if you’re into that sort of thing, and seems as though there will be enough back ground drama to keep those of us that get bored easily from getting too bored. While I’m not heavy into the slasher type stories, there may be enough mystery here to keep me interested for longer than 3 episodes. I will definitely be giving it another watch. Besides, with ER gone, what else do I have to do on a Thursday night?
