PCB and I were lucky enough to attend the Las Vegas show of Maxwell's Summer 09 Tour, where he graced the audience with songs from his previous 3 albums and a couple from his new upcoming album BLACKsummers'night due out in July 7, 2009 (That's next week y'know.)
While Maxwell and his crew took about an hour to take to the stage, it was definitely worth the wait. I had seen him back in '98 or '99 when he toured for his second album Embrya, and you could tell, he has made a drastic improvement in his stage performance.
Maxwell looked comfortable, had fun with the audience, and was a class act (Dedicating Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work" to the late and great Michael Jackson).Unfortunately as long as it took Maxwell to get on the stage, he quickly left. He sang for about 60-75 minutes with one encore. Missing from this set list was a crowd favorite "Whenever, Wherever, Whatever," and people began to leave early. Either to miss the traffic or just go to the "after party" that frankly, at the Palms in Vegas was going to be filled with D* Bags covered in Axe Body Spray or Abercrombie and Fitch's date rape cologne.
Maxwell did perform Pretty Wings and a couple songs from his new album, including "Stop The World." Which in his own words is his version of "Knockin Boots but the titles nicer." I think this album will stray form his previous 3 in the sense his sound is more mature, a little rough around the edges yet still holding on to what we all love Maxwell for: creating great songs about life and love. And that's fine by me.
