Short Film Review: Quick Shop

We reviewed Martin Binder's One-Day Seminar a few months back and now he is back with something completely different.  This time he takes on horror, which just so happens to be my favorite genre.

Unfortunately, Quick Shop isn't nearly as successful as One Day Seminar was.

The story revolves around two friends who apparently had a bit of a clash about a girl on a trip to visit one of their parents, I guess to repair their frazzled friendship.  Along the way, they make a bathroom stop at a rural convenience store, the titular Quick Shop, wherein they are terrorized by the shop owner.

I'll give the movie points for the clever little twist but it's at that point where the film should have ended.  Instead it goes of to try and surprise yet again except this one doesn't make a lick of sense.

I don't want to give away anything for those who do intend to try and see this one day so you'll have to see for yourself.

Quick Shop feels more like a first short than a follow-up.  It has problems with lighting, some poorly mixed sound and even a pixelated sign in the store (I'm guessing someone didn't watch for logos or trademarks on the set.)

The acting is okay if not a little underwhelming, the best of which comes from Aimee Wein who is only in the first minute or so of the film.

I really enjoyed One Day Seminar and I had high hopes for Quick Shop.  Unfortunately, it doesn't quite live up to them.  I know how difficult horror is, especially if you have a finite time to tell a good scary story.  This one just felt rushed and may have been served by some more time with the script in order to flesh out or better yet completely change the opening and the endings as they really do not fit at all.

Still, Quick Shop has potential and I think future works in the genre might prove more successful for Binder.
