Music Review: Counting Crows ~ "August and Everything After - LIVE at Town Hall"

It's been 3 years since the Counting Crows last studio album and with no new music in sight the band has attempted to appease its fans with the release of the new "LIVE" CD (their 4th) "August and Everything After: Live at Town Hall."

Recorded live in New York City on September 18, 2007, "August and Everything After: Live at Town Hall" finds the band doing exactly what the title says… playing their debut (and most successful) CD "August and Everything After" in it's entirety from start to finish.

The band sounds great on this release. My only problem is that I could have done without lead singer Adam Duritz's improvisational singing interludes which cause 4 of the songs to be pushed to over 8 minutes long. This may be fun when you are actually at the show but when you are listening in your car that kind of self indulgent vamping can be a little exhausting.

I do love that this was recorded during one show instead of pieced together from many concerts, which is usually the norm with LIVE albums these days. Still, it's not the best Counting Crows LIVE album. For that I would recommend the double CD "Across A Wire: Live in New York City" which documents the band's 1997 performances on VH-1's Storytellers and MTV's LIVE from the 10 Spot.

Here's hoping that the band releases some new music in the upcoming year. But, until then, die-hard fans will love "August and Everything After: Live at Town Hall" while the rest of us keep waiting.

Drumroll please… 6 out of 10 drumsticks!!
