Something BIG is Coming: Google + Samsung Event

Well ladies and gents, it's that time again, Google has decided today is the day to unwrap some delicious Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) for us. As well as invite their friend Samsung along to announce Google's next Nexus phone.

I'll be blogging the event which starts at 10AM (HKT) which is 7pm PST/10pm EST. But for those of you more proactive users you can head over to www.youtube.com/android where el Goog has set up a live stream for the event. Enjoy the festivities!

[Update 7:02]: The presentation is starting right now! Samsung head of Mobile Communications is on stage.

[Update 7:04]: Ice Cream Sandwich is real, just announced to be coming today.

[Update 7:06]: LTE (So the Verizon rumor is a yes), dual-core, unique curved design, and "unparalleled performance".

[Update 7:07]:
Head of Android for Google is on stage, Andy Rubin.

[Update 7:08]: "The engineering teams lived in one building with the software team essentially"

[Update 7:11]: Galaxy Nexus is official. They are going to talk about 4 areas of the phone. Speed. Screen. Design. OS. Hit the break (the Rawr below) to see the rest of the event.

[Update 7:12]: Going to have LTE and HSPA+ so that means AT&T-Mobile will get it at some point soon. So Verizon will have to share the love.

[Update 7:14]: Talking Screens now. Super AMOLED is being heralded. Now we are getting Super AMOLED HD. That is getting really long.... Oh, and it's a 4.65 inch display 1280x720 on the phone.

[Update 7:17]: Next up is Design. "Emotional connection to the hardware". The phone will be designed with a curved piece of glass for the screen. The device is 8.49 mm thin with only a 4.29mm bezel. WHAT WE'VE ALWAYS WANTED MANUFACTURES.

[Update 7:19]: Buttonless design, something we've wanted out of Ice Cream Sandwich (and Honeycomb before it).

[Update 7:20]: Only a 5MP camera, but lets remember pixels aren't everything. I hope Samsung comes packing with the sensors.

[Update 7:21]: Release dates: November! Japan's DoCoMo was the only carrier mentioned the sly bastards. We'll see a US carrier at some point in this presentation.

[Update 7:23]: We are talking Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich now. Android is ENCHANTING. Android should SIMPLIFY my life. Android should MAKE ME AWESOME.

[Update 7:24]: Randomly we have a new font for android. Then a quick jab at Apples iOS. Brand new lock screen for stock Android, I likely so far.

[Update 7:20]: The new UI, at least on this device seems VERY minimalistic. New scrolling and stacks for Widgets, as well as an easier way to find them, in with your App drawer.

[Update 7:29]: VERY good new multitasking feature for changing apps, right in the nav area with home and back.

[Update 7:33]: The updated keyboard in 4.0 is more accurate and has a nice makeover. Also is a "inline correction" feature. The Voice-to-text feature has been updated too, it is now much faster and is more intuitive. (No Siri here yet.)

[Update 7:34: We are now talking unlock screens. New Feature Face Unlock, which didn't work for them sadly lol. Seems interesting if it works.

[Update 7:37]: New browser. Looks very nice with a similar tab browsing to the app switcher mentioned earlier. Also is a built in mode to force sites to desktop modes, Very Nice. Now with Chrome Bookmark sync if you believe their flavor of browsers.

[Update 7:40]: New Gmail with beautiful new animations. The emails look great in a whole new set up for viewing. Windows Phone 7 (And most recent Android Market) style swiping between emails.

[Update 7:41]: This swipe between similar things seems ever-present in android now. Calendars now have pinch to zoom to expand out your day.

[Update 7:42]: New Settings facelift seems very nice. They are focusing on Data usage which seems very robust, showing you what you want when you want.

[Update 7:46]: Now we are on to photos. (And Camera.) It seems to snap shots VERY quickly, which is of course partially supplied by Samsung's tech. Auto-Set exposure. Facal recognition. New set of editing tools to clean up your shots to get them just right.

[Update 7:47]: New Gallery, with a "magazine" style gallery. No also you can take panorama pictures built in. Seems very good.

[Update 7:50]: New Phone app with visual voicemail integration. Also new is Quick Response which lets you send texts replies instead of just ignoring phone calls.

[Update 7:55]: New NFC based tech called Beam which lets you touch phones to send all sorts of content like maps, and web pages. And even send open apps to people by sending them to the market page.

[Update 7:57]: Samsung guys is back. The Thank You's are going around. Really no Verizon announcement or anything beyond November for a release. Shame Google/Samsung. The phone looks great but I want to know when we can see it ourselves and on what carriers..
