Music Review: Carly Simon - "Spoiled Girl" CD Reissue

In 1985 Carly Simon was ready to embrace the 80's when she released her 12th studio album "Spoiled Girl."

The 11 songs on "Spoiled Girl" were overseen by 8 different producers including Don Was, Arthur Baker and Phil Ramone.  With this many cooks in the kitchen you would think that the tone of the album would be uneven when in fact everyone involved had the same goal... help Carly Simon compete with Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and any other female singer climbing the dance pop charts in the mid 80's.

So was the experiment successful?... almost.

"Spoiled Girl" has it's moments including the title track, "My New Boyfriend" and the only song that Simon did not have a hand in writing... "Tired Of Being Blonde."   Overall the album proved to be a disappointment both critically and commercially and after just one album Carly Simon was no longer on the EPIC Records roster.  2 years later Simon would reemerge with her multi-platinum comeback album "Coming Around Again."

As a time capsule piece of pop music that never came to fruition "Spoiled Girl" is still a fun listen and the UK's "Hot Shot Records" has done a great job remastering the original CD because it sounds amazing and includes extensive liner notes plus 4 bonus tracks.

If you're a diehard Carly Simon fan this album might be a must have release but for the casual fan of this great singer-songwriter the 2012 reissue might not be the best way to spend your money.

Here's hoping that "Hot Shot Records" can get the rights to "Coming Around Again" and give it the same loving care they did for "Spoiled Girl."  Aaaah anticipation... it's making me wait!

Drumroll please... 6 out of 10 drumsticks!!!
