Classic TV Bloopers: Uncensored DVD Review

Classic TV Bloopers: Uncensored presents approximately an hour and sixteen minutes of flubbed lines and other goofs from the sets of television programs from the 1950s to the 1980s. The opening sequence identifies the specific programs from each clip, but unfortunately the feature doesn’t (though most of these programs will be easy to identify). The clips come one after the other, with no introductions, set-ups or host making annoying jokes.  While not every clip is noteworthy, there are plenty of shots that will have you laughing. And I like that clips from individual series are presented together in a group.

There is lots of great stuff from Happy Days, including Ron Howard falling down the stairs and Henry Winkler repeatedly cracking up during one particular scene. There is also some footage from Laverne & Shirley.

I was glad that this collection featured several flubs from M.A.S.H. (one of my favorite shows), including a short montage of various cast members saying, “Shit.” There is some footage from The Dukes Of Hazzard, a show I loved as a kid. It’s particularly great seeing Rosco P. Coltrane saying, “I’ll shoot the living shit out of you” into a megaphone.

One of my favorite bits in this collection is the clip from the children’s show New Zoo Revue. I remember really not liking that show when I was a kid, but I love this clip. It’s incredibly funny, particularly because it is a show aimed at children. I think I would have appreciated the show just a bit more as a child had I seen this clip then.

There are lots of outtakes from the original Star Trek series, including several bits where actors walk into those doors, because the crew members didn’t open them in time. Plus, there is some great clowning around by cast members.

And speaking of bloopers related to Star Trek, that’s a nice misspelling of Leonard Nimoy’s name on the DVD box. (See photo.) It’s misspelled on the back too. That’s great, considering this is a DVD that is pointing out others’ mistakes.

Other shows featured in this collection include The Dick Van Dyke Show, Hogan’s Heroes, I Love Lucy, Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. There’s something from The Tonight Show that is seriously hilarious.

There are some weird bits with commercials too. The Johnson’s baby powder ad is delicious. The Citgo bit is great too, but I really wish I knew exactly where this footage was from. It can’t be an outtake from an actual Citgo commercial, can it? If so, that actor is seriously ballsy.

Bonus Features

This DVD has a couple of good bonus features. The first is an episode of the Jack Benny Show, with Bob Hope and Martin & Lewis. This was a live 1950s broadcast. It’s the whole show (approximately 26 minutes), with a bit of fooling around, some ad-libbing and some flubbed lines. Both Jack and Bob crack up at times. And so did I while watching. By the way, Martin & Lewis appear only very briefly.

The second bonus feature is “1960s TV Gag Reel,” which is approximately fifteen and a half minutes. It includes a shot of a cow ad-libbing on set during a live broadcast.

There is also a trailer for the Classic Movie Bloopers:Uncensored DVD, which was released at the same time as Classic TV Bloopers: Uncensored. Both were released on January 29, 2013 through Legend Films.
