When I was growing up in rural Michigan in the 80s and 90s, there was only one thing ever said about gay people: that they were bad. Obviously, that's not true, but how are you going to feel if you're a gay kid hearing that message? The landscape surrounding being gay/queer/LGBT is changing, fortunately, but it's still important for gay youth to hear that they shouldn't be put down, but celebrated!

This great zine does just that, highlighting voices from a number of queer young people in Riverside, California, a place known for its conservatism. The zine includes essays and interviews about discovering one's gender identity/sexuality, photos of queer kids in Riverside, and art features. They all contribute to a thoughtful, comfortable space for gay youth to learn they're not alone. Queer or not, you'll find the insights encouraging, and some of the stories painful.

On to the "it's aiight" portion of the review: This is a general beef I have with a lot of stuff written about queer and feminist culture: the overwrought vocabulary! One writer identifies as a "queer anarcho-feminist punk of color" and discusses harm reduction in substance use as "decolonizing our minds." Then the editors say that "our liberation is intersectional, intergenerational, queer & trans inclusive." Ugh, who talks like that? It's a real turn-off. If one's mission is to be inclusive, then why use language like that? Maybe that's how those "Safer Spaces" at zine fests work--nobody knows what the hell anyone is saying, anyway.

The Inland Empire Queer and Trans Youth Visibility Project identified its mission for this zine: "If you are young or a person of color or queer or trans-identified and reading this, we want you to know that you are not alone and that your life is SO valuable." They definitely succeeded in conveying that important message.

HEY! There is a queer youth event October 15, 2013 at USC! Check this out! The Queer and Trans Youth Visibility Project is involved! There will be a zine-making workshop! http://lifeworks.nationbuilder.com/
