BLOG ZINE! The Grim Reaper In A Balloon Hat

by Kari Tervo

Zine reviews! What shall we talk about today? Hrm. Oh! Hey! It's the holiday season! How about two of America's favorite celebration topics: balloon animals and death!

Here's the FAQ, ya big dummy.

This zine is one of the reasons I read zines: unique insights into worlds that I didn't even know I would be interested in reading about. Sarah Rose is a professional balloon artist! Like, yes, this woman pays her bills by twisting balloons into delightful shapes to make people smile! We learn about various aspects of the business, such as the best balloons for twisting, strategies to make tips at restaurants, and the ins and outs of parties at private homes. The cool thing about this zine is that it's a topic zine, but it's also a per-zine (personal zine). That is, while we are learning about the business of balloon twisting, we also find out a lot about Sarah Rose and her life. She seems particularly suited to this career, not just as an artist, but as a sensitive person who perceives the emotional needs of her clients. For instance, some middle-aged women ask her to make them a "husband" from balloons. Sarah Rose advises, "Make them a flower instead. If you do make them a balloon man, it will only make them look lonelier." Sarah Rose rounds out her balloon art survey course with a few delightful anecdotes from working children's parties. Though the balloon-art business may have its highs, lows, and scams, Sarah Rose rises to the occasion each time (with helium?) and shows that she is indeed unpoppable.

Do not ask for whom this zine tolls, it tolls for thee. He's coming for you. Death. He's right there on the cover, with his scythe and an hourglass. Inside, you'll find artistic representations of death both creepy and clever. Forever Dead is short and simple, but there's a lot of concept packed into each drawing and emblem. You might simply scan the drawings or go so far as to contemplate your own mortality, but you'll be left with a sense of appreciation for what this zine does: It makes the heavy concept of death accessible by shining it with a little silly. You might not think a conceptual art zine about death would make you smile, but Forever Dead will transform you into the Grin Reaper.
