Hey! It's a new year! Welcome to 2014, and welcome back to Blog Zine, the weekly zine review column that does not always appear weekly! Sorry, it was the holidays. I was out in the desert, playing darts. I think that's a freaking cool excuse, if you have to have one.
What the heck are we doing here? Here's the FAQ. There will be a quiz.

Beauty manifests in multiple forms. It can be as tangible as the visual treat of a photo, or expressed in a lovely string of words. Or, beauty can express itself as a sensed concept: the grit of a survivor; the potential of a young artist. From Hell to Highwater #1 embodies each of these kinds of beauty, and more. In this compilation zine of poetry, stories, art, and photos, editor Lisa Y. Mendez and her contributors ponder and mold the struggles of war, migrant farm work, and suicide. The fragile beauty of the human condition is conveyed through explorations of tension and survival. Beauties not as soul-scorching, like light-heartedness and cool art, are also displayed: There's a poem about curtailing the consequences of an enchilada habit for the sake of one's children, and some really cool curb stencils. From Hell to Highwater #1 takes you on a beautiful emotional journey, showcasing life's highs and lows, both everyday and extreme.
Editor Lisa Y. Mendez, who is based in San Diego, is also contributing to the zine community with her new project, the Uno Foto Mobile Zine Library! She's loading up her library-on-wheels and carting zine beauty to locations near and far! If you'd like to donate to or take a look at the Uno Foto Mobile Zine Library, like "From Hell To Highwater Zine" on Facebook to receive updates. Or, look for Lisa at the 2014 Los Angeles Zine Fest on February 16th!
