Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 DVD Review

Part one of the highly anticipated DC Animated adaptation of Frank Miller's iconic The Dark Knight Returns arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray September 25th.

DC has really outdone themselves with the amazing voice talent in this film: Peter Weller (RoboCop) stars as Batman/Bruce Wayne, David Selby (The Social Network) as Commissioner Gordon, and Ariel Winter ("Modern Family") as Carrie Kelley/Robin.

It's been ten years since Bruce Wayne has donned the cape and cowl. He watches as the city he once protected falls to the ruthless gang known as The Mutants. Bruce decides to come out of retirement to take back Gotham from The Mutants and a few other familiar faces with the help of a new Robin.

This is one of the best DC Animated films to date! Directed by Jay Olivia ("Young Justice"), The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 is the most faithful adaptation I've ever seen. Incorporating Frank Miller's iconic character designs and use of TV broadcasts, the film is almost identical to the original work.

There aren't many special features on the DVD, but there is a sneak peak at Part two, due out in early 2013!

I cannot rave enough about how awesome this is! I only hope that after part two is released, Warner Brothers combines both parts into a special edition extended cut!

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 on DVD earns a 10 out of 10 Mutants!!

Sin City makes its eagerly awaited debut on blu-ray today and it was well worth the wait. I'm not going to make this a long drawn out review. Most of you out there know what Sin City is. If not, then click this link and buy it immediately. It's second only to The Dark Knight as far as comic book movies go and as far as movies go? It's a work of art. Hyper violent, hyper stylized, beautifully shot, written, edited, and an absolute vision to behold on blu-ray.

You can probably tell I am a fan of this movie. That's true. When I first saw it my mind was blown. This is what movies are all about. Excitement, explosions, ninja like hookers! It was an amazing film to watch on the big screen.

Here we are now a few years later and Sin City is now out on blu-ray. If any film was made for the format it's this one. It looks glorious and explodes of the screen. It's like seeing it for the first time. The picture is crystal clear and the colors, when they are featured, are gorgeous.

The film is essentially the extended edition set they put out a while back with a couple blu-ray extras like Cine-explore, which plays commentary from Rodriguez and Miller as well as panels showing green screen footage and shots from the graphic novels.

The other blu-ray exclusive feature is the interactive comic/game Kill 'Em Good which allows you to play as Marv and kill a bunch of people, drive a stolen police car, and watch Nancy dance.

The rest of the extras have been included in previous releases of the film but are no less necessary here. Great commentary and featurettes take you even deeper into the film.

The biggest feature of all is the recut and extended edition of the film. Each chapter is extended and separated into four short films with extra footage. I won't go into details about what you'll see, but fans of the film are sure to be pleased.

There isn't much else to say. Sin City is a brilliant film and an extraordinary achievement in its own right. To pull out the old classic line: You haven't seen Sin City until you've seen it on blu-ray.

The Spirit

I really wanted to like this movie, so I entered the theatre expecting to see some old-school noir; true to the older comics the movie draws it's inspiriation from, along with Frank Miller's signature Sin City film looks.

Sadly, I left disappointed. The script is less than inspired. Rather than drawing directly from the comics, or having Eisner script the film, Miller wrote it himself. In places, the story and dialogue are a bit stiff, and the whole thing gives a very cobbled-together feeling that leaves you thinking that perhaps Miller wrote it over a series of coffee breaks, talking to twelve different people about what they expected from the film.

Miller indulges in inappropriate cliches (Denny Colt is somehow such an inveterate womanizer that he literally flirts with every woman he meets) and can't seem to decide if he wants the film to be serious, or old-style newsprint camp (one big fight scene leaves you expecting to see screen shots labeled with "Biff! Pow! Bam!").

The only performance in the film that leaves you with any kind of a smile is Eva Mendes, who delivers her hastily-written lines with such style, you almost forgive the content. Sadly, the star character (Gabriel Macht) comes off as rather one-dimensional. Shouldn't a guy who's cheated death be a little more interesting?

Samuel L Jackson pretty much speaks for himself. If you don't know what to expect from one of his performances by now, I don't know that I can help you there.

Lastly, another thing that bugged me, stylistically speaking, about this film: anachronisms. Are we going for 40's noir, or not? The entire film had the same style of cinematography as Sin City. It pretty much looked like Sin City. However, being based on a 40's comic, it looked like Miller was largely trying to go for a 40's noir look.

Except for the cell phones. And the weaponry.

And the Chuck Taylors the title character was sporting.

I mean come on, Chuck Taylors?

Seriously?
