Dexter Season 5 DVD Review

America's favorite serial killer is back and as violent as ever! This season he meets a mysterious woman named Lumen, played by Julia Stiles, and enlists her help to take down a fraternity of killers. As always, Dexter's family and colleagues get closer and closer to his dark secret.

All 13 episodes of season 5 are included in this 4 disc set. All of the episodes are great and extremely compelling. Season 5 is one of the best Dexter seasons yet.

The only bad thing about the DVD set is that there are almost no special features. The only on disc special features are the first two episodes of both The Borgias and Episodes. Using Showtime's e-Bridge technology there are interviews with most of the cast including Michael C. Hall, Julia Stiles, Jennifer Carpenter, James Remar, and David Zayas. Also, there is a special on Julia Stiles' reflection of the series.

These features sound great, but it's very disappointing that they are not on the actual DVD. I would rather have the Dexter special features available on the last disc and the other show episodes offered via e-Bridge.

All in all, it was a very gripping season and will make an excellent addition to any Dexter fan's collection.

I give the Dexter Season 5 DVD a 7 out of 10 Blood Slides!

Blu-ray Review: Dexter - The Third Season

Dexter: The Third Season
Starring: Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter, C.S. Lee, Lauren Velez, David Zayas, James Remar, and Jimmy Smits

From the box:

The groundbreaking and critically acclaimed series from Showtime returns on Blu-Ray with all 12 thrilling and riveting episodes in Dexter: The Third Season. Having faced his darkest demons and eluding the FBI, Dexter has a new take on life when a high profile case puts him in the sights of the most powerful and influential D.A. in Miami. Will Dexter's need to do away with those who slip through the cracks finally lead to his undoing? Or will his new friend in the D.A.'s office prove to be all he needs to have his cake and eat it too?

Showtime's absolutely brilliant show Dexter arrives on Blu-ray and DVD today with the complete third season.

Click the Rawr! for our complete review.

I'll say it flat out: Dexter is fantastic. Each season the show gets progressively better and with Season Three, that trend continues.

This time, Dexter finds himself in the midst of several life changes. The kind of changes you wouldn't expect to see our lovable serial killer experiencing. None the less, there they are and Dexter is forced to become more human than even he believed himself capable of.

He even finds himself with something he never thought he'd have: a friend. Right?

This friend is played brilliantly by Jimmy Smits. I've never been a huge fan of his but he really threw himself into this role and played the part wonderfully.

The show continues to be tense, and exciting, and often times tinged with a perfect amount of humor. Each episode increases the tension and you never know just how Dexter is going to get out of the mess he's in this go around. You never feel secure in knowing that everything is going to turn out okay.

With this show, we have a cast that just gets better with each season. Especially, its star Michael C. Hall who never ceases to impress. He is ripe for an Emmy win. The cast seems to fall more and more into place, building chemistry and playing off each other. Even when new characters are added, they immediately feel like part of the family. SAG needs to recognize this cast asap.

The writing continues to be top notch. Clever, funny, dark, and keeping a serial killer as someone we not only like but care for. For all his flaws, Dexter is a great character.

Season Three is even better than the previous seasons which gives me high hopes for Season Four. Especially, knowing that John Lithgow is coming on board.

The show is gorgeous in High-Def. Crystal clear picture, vibrant colors, crisp sound. It's the way Dexter is meant to be seen.

The special features include: Excerpts from the books (which are a must read for any fans of the show), The first two episodes of the equally brilliant United States of Tara, Two Episodes from Season Three of The Tudors, cast interviews, and more.

It's a pretty decently supported set but honestly the features are just fluff compared to the genius of the show.

I've said before that Showtime is the new HBO and not even the greatness of True Blood can change the fact that Showtime has one of the best shows on TV now with Dexter.

This is a can't miss show.

Dexter: The Third Season is available DVD and Blu-ray today.

New Show Alert: The United States of Tara

The United States of Tara is the latest original series from Showtime premiering January 18 at 10:00 PM. Showtime already has two of the best shows on TV right now with Californication and Dexter and now they have added a third.

The United States of Tara is a comedy/drama about a woman with multiple personalities and how her family deals with the fallout. These "alters" come out when Tara is unable to deal with whatever situation is presenting itself. So far Tara has three other personalities: a fifteen year old girl named T, Buck the white trash biker, and Alice the perfect housewife.

The United States of Tara is a fantastic show. A simply perfect blend of laughs and drama that is brilliantly written by (love her or hate her, I subscribe to the former) Diablo Cody of Juno fame. The diaglogue isn't nearly as headscratching as Juno tended to be so don't be worried. I will say that Diablo Cody has given us a stunning show with believable and relatable chracters. The cast is exquisite, especially Toni Colette and Keir Gilchrist, who plays Tara's son Marshall. Toni Colette is amazing here playing each of these personalities perfectly. I can definitely see some awards for her in the future.

The show is extremely funny but also touching as we see how this family deals with Tara's affliction. Each character has issues of their own that contribute to the alter's appearance and it makes for an extremely interesting dynamic.

The show has a few surprise guest stars as well that comedy and Arrested Development fans will recognize. I'll keep them secret and let you see for yourself.

I have the first four episodes of the show and after watching two of them I had to write this up. It's too good to delay getting the word out. My problem now is that I'll have to wait a month for the fifth episode to premiere. Ah the life of a critic, a double edged sword if ever there was one.

The United States of Tara premieres January 18 at 10 on Showtime. This is simply a can't miss show. I absolutely 100% unequivocally love this show. I'll say it again: One of the best new shows of the year. Discover it for yourself.

Dexter finale kills

Showtime can breath a thankful sigh as this season's finale brought in the best numbers since 2004. 1.5 million viewers tuned in to see their favorite fiend finally marry.

Apparently, this is an increase of 25% from last season's finale, which is unsurprising to me. Season three has been far better than season two ever was, as the writers gravitate back to emulating the novels which the character is based on.

Jeff Lindsay's Dexter novels are full of artful prose and the dark humour that makes the show such a hit. Something sure to please if you're looking for a stocking stuffer for a fan of the show.

Review: Californication Season One

HBO was always Cable's darling with The Sopranos, Deadwood, Carnivale, Sex and the City, among others critics and fans alike loved and devoured their shows. I have to say those days might have come and gone because Showtime is taking over.

With shows like Dexter and The Tudors, Showtime is bringing fresh new shows that viewers are connecting with.

One such show is Californication.

If you don't want to read this entire review, I'll sum it up for you right now: Californication is the best show on television right now. Hands down, this show is utterly and undeniably perfect in every conceivable way.

When I first saw the previews for the show I wasn't interested in it. I thought it was just another sex romp about a neurotic struggling to hold onto his glory days and I wrote it off as something I'd rather not waste my time on. Besides I had enough shows to follow.

Here we are now, Showtime was kind enough to send Californication Season One along with Dexter Season 2.

I could not be happier to be honest. It is an unexpected joy to see this show.

Tom Kapinos has created a masterpiece. A touching, funny, sexy, and deeply human show that is unlike anything else we are seeing on television today.

Californication is about writer Hank Moody and his struggle to deal with career (he is a writer who isn't writing), his daughter and her mother (whom Hank still loves), and various women and vices he has. He isn't neurotic, he's just Hank. Nothing he does is entirely thought out or smart but he does these things because he wants to. He certainly comes off as an asshole (pardon the french) but you cannot help but love the guy. This is a testament to David Duchovny who simply makes this character come alive. He is simply brilliant in this role. Brilliant is a word used a lot, especially by me, but in all honesty, Duchovny is just that. He handles every scene and line like a virtuoso. He is more than deserving of the Golden Globe he received for the part.

This is a show that expertly weaves comedy and drama in perfect thirty minute bites. It is rich with emotion and stories that border on genius. I could not stop watching and really want more (I guess it's good I also received the first four episodes of Season 2).

I mentioned David Duchovny but I also have to bring to light the rest of the cast. They are all simply amazing. There is a great chemistry with everyone and interact with each other like a cast that has been working together for years.

Pamela Adlon, Evan Handler, Rachel Miner, Damian Young, and Madeline Zima are the supporting players and are all fantastic. None of their characters are less important than the others. Everyone in this show is intricate to what is happening and its rare for a show to have such great characters throughout. There isn't a single one you want to see go away.

Hank is extremely devoted to his daughter Becca, played by Madeleine Martin. Becca is a Wednesday Addams type girl who leads a rock band and wants a dog and loves her Father. She is complex and smart beyond her years. She wants so much for her Mother Karen, played stunningly by Natascha McElhone, and her Father to get together. She hopes for this to happen even as her Mother is preparing to marry someone else.

I don't want to give too much detail as this is something you really need to watch. I can sit here and type all night as to how much I am in love with this show.

There is not a bad episode in the 12 that make up season one. The music is perfectly placed, each song you hear almost feels like it was written specifically for the moment, even songs decades old. The acting amazing, the writing is incredible. I can't say enough good things.

I will say that Season Two starts this Sunday, September 28 at 10PM, right after the Season Three premiere of Dexter.

Californication Season One is on DVD now. Do yourself a favor and go buy it. Immediately.

With all these great shows Showtime is putting out there, I think it might be time to say that Showtime is the new HBO.

I really need to start catching up on the rest of their shows...

Dexter Season 2 Review!

In the spirit of full disclosure let me say that when Dexter first premiered on Showtime I wasn't impressed. I watched a couple of episodes and then forgot all about it. It just didn't catch my attention. Cut to a few months later, I'm visiting my local Target and Dexter Season One is on sale. I'm a sucker for a deal and people had been raving about it so I thought maybe I'm wrong and decided to give the show another shot.

I should also mention I am a huge fan of the books. The Dexter novels are deeply entertaining and I can't wait for the next one.

Anyway, back to the show. I get home and pop in season one and simply cannot stop watching it. I don't know what I was missing the first time around but I absolutely fell in love with the show. I loved every single second of it.

Now, here we are about a year later and Showtime is kind enough to send me Dexter Season 2 on DVD.

Jackpot. I'm glad I waited to watch this season on DVD. I probably would not have been able to take the wait between episodes. This season is brilliant. From the opening episode to the season finale it is nail biting suspense and edge of your seat tension. This season of Dexter had me guessing more than any show on television. I just could not fathom where the writers were going.

Let me give you the basic plot without spoiling too much. Dexter is a serial killer. He only kills other murderers as he was taught to do by his foster father Harry. After the events of season one he is left in a bit of a funk and is desperately trying to get out of it. He is unsure of himself and his abilities and at one point can't even complete the job of killing one of his victims. Add to that a couple of treasure hunters stumble across his oceanic dumping ground and now he has the F.B.I and all his police colleagues looking for him.

Rough times for our friendly neighborhood serial killer.

Season Two
takes our friend to some pretty interesting and dark places. I won't spoil anything, but I will say that you will be riveted. Like I said, you won't know how anything is going to turn out from one episode to the next. This season of Dexter is television at its best and solidifies Dexter as the best show on cable TV and probably one of the top 10 on television period.

The cast is impeccable and Michael C. Hall is simple brilliant as Dexter (I smell an Emmy!). He has an uncanny way to go from charming to a bit horrifiying without blinking. He makes a character we should be terrified of into someone we care for and support 100%. This is acting at its best. The entire cast delivers perfect performances.

If you have never seen Dexter before I urge you to pick up seasons one and two. You're getting everything you could ask for in this show. Laughs, chills, emotions, amazing characters, a brilliant cast...it's all here. I for one could not turn it off. I went through the entire second season in 2 days.

Dexter is a can't miss show. It's flawless. Amazing storytelling, stellar acting. What else can I say? BUY IT.

Dexter
returns to Showtime on September 28 and I am lucky enough to have in my possession the first 4 episodes of the new season (Thanks Showtime!!!). I'll be watching those in the next few days and will have my thoughts on them for you all next week.
