Video Game Review - Wii Sports Resort

Though I was annoyed to have to buy yet another twenty dollar accessory for my Wii, I believe that Wii Sports Resort is worth the extra expenditure. The Wii Motion Plus does add much to game play, and the game does include one Wii Motion with it. If you have more than one person who would like to play at a time, you will find yourself having to run out and grab another one, or 2, or 3.

Having said that, Wii Sports Resort does live up to the hype.

The game is full immersion, or about as close as you can get to it considering that you're a small caricature of yourself.

Wii Sports Resort offers many new mini games, as well as new twists on old ones. There are many games, but some of the newer ones are Basketball, Swordsplay, (a personal favorite of mine; but I was a fencer for several years,) Frisbee, both disc golf and Frisbee Dog, an exercise where you throw a Frisbee to a dog, and you receive points dependent on how close you are to the target. Various water sports, (Canoeing, Power Crusing Sea-doo style, and Wakeboarding) where you trick, jump, or just paddle your way to glory, Archery, cycling... well you get the idea. You basically do not have to leave your house to pretend you have an active lifestyle. If Nintendo keeps this up, I suspect that by 2015 no one will leave their houses and we will all converse over Facebook, Twitter, and Wii Speak.

The old favorites, such as Bowling and Golf make an appearance in this game too, but with the Wii Motion accessory these games are not as easy as they were in the original Wii Sports.

My favorite are the Frisbee games, whereas my kids prefer the Airplane flying exercises. (of course, I think my son just likes running his airplane into the water, where his Mii gets shot out of the airplane as though on an ejector seat.)

This game is for parties, as the game play is easy to pick up on, (though not exactly easy to master) there are many multi-player options, some of which can be played with just one controller for 4 people.

This game awards "stamps" every time you make a noteworthy accomplishment, Wii Fit style. The stamps are dependent on game of course. Some of them are the standard "score this much in one game" on the other hand, others are very specific accomplishments, (lucky skip, a stamp you earn when you skip a Frisbee off of the water and back in to fair play in Frisbee golf comes to mind.)

All and all Wii Sports Resort is a fantastic, very well produced game. I have not yet found a glitch in it, graphically or otherwise. The only major flaw is having to figure out a way to kick my kids off of it so that I can play!

Wii Fit: Look like an iidiiot iin the priivacy of your own home!

So I recently got a copy of Wii Fit, and well, it's a pretty great game. It rox the sox for several reasons:

(a) It's a game that insults you, politely, but still I hear about it any time I sneak a late night snack.
(b) It does take steps to improve your posture, something that many folks could use help with.
(c) it's simple enough for a child to do, but fun enough that an adult doesn't mind looking like an idiot doing it.

Wii fit is a set of several mini games aimed at improving your balance, doing aerobic exercises, learning basic yoga and strength exercises. One of the big time favorites here is the hula hoop exercise, where you emulate using a hula hoop on the Wii Balance board, (which you stand on). Kids look normal doing this exercise, but grown men look downright 'mentally challenged'. The simple balance games are addictive, especially the ski jump (which is just what it sounds like, a emulated ski jump hill), and the penguin feeding game, where you lean to and fro on the balance board sliding a penguin to flopping fish on an iceberg. Among one of the harder (read: lamer) games is the Lotus Focus game. The "game" is sitting on the balance board as still as you can manage for as long as you can manage. If the "trainer" deems that you are not still enough, a Kanji symbol appears on the screen along with a loud "Heeya!" sound, which when you are sitting still and focused makes you jump out of your skin and through the ceiling. I was only able to complete the game once, in a quiet and still house, hitting a deep meditation state. Yeah, that's going to happen in a regular house.

The aerobic games should really be called rhythm games. Basic and advanced step pay more attention to when you step on the board than where you step, and the rhythm boxing might as well be dance class, still fun.

The Yoga mode and the strength training mode aren't as fun, but you really feel as though you've done a workout after finishing a few of them.

I hear ya though, "That's all well and good Ives, but where in hell do you get the stupid game?" Well, forget about brick and mortar stores, those are bought up by craigslist or ebay scalpers before you even find out there are there most times. My Mother bought three copies of this game at different times for various family members, and always got it within a few days by ordering online. She used Toysrus.com, but I would imagine you could have same luck just about anywhere.

Sure, it's almost 90 dollar price tag is a bit of a killjoy, but think about a gym membership and how much that would cost you. and there, other people can actually SEE you being an idiot.
