$11,591,000. The box office take for "Grindhouse" over opening weekend. It opened in 4th place. What is the explanatin for this? The projected gross for GH was 20 - 25 million yet it only brought in just about half that amount. When I heard this yesterday my jaw droped. "But its Quentin...and Robert...and it's so fucking good..." What the hell happened?
My best guess? Easter Weekend. Not exactly the best time to release a movie celebrating exploitation and violence. It seems Easter weekend is a more family oriented time for films. That can be the only explanation for "Are We Done Yet" making more money than "Grindhouse". Where were all the fans of these directors? I saw it at 12:20 in the morning and the theatre was packed. My only guess is that families overran the theatres this weekend. That and the running time. Longer movie = Less showings.
Let's see how "Grindhouse"fares over the next weeks. My prediction is steady income from word of mouth.
At any rate it will be huge on DVD.
