Movie Review: Dying God

Dying God is a rather middle of the pack horror thriller about, you guessed it perceptive one, a dying god. The movie isn’t about a mayan god out to do gore-y harm to some unsuspecting American vacationeers, or even a supernatural mayan god that controls an evil army of the dead out to gore the world to death. All of which sound like rather interesting premises compared to what Dying God actually is. Dying God is actually about a corrupt cop, Sean Fallon (James Horan) trying to solve a series of bizarre rape-murders. The murderer? A horny mayan god with a giant penis looking to inseminate hookers, but ultimately killing them by “stabbing” from the inside out with its giant penis.

To answer your questions before you ask, No, No, Yes, and no I am not kidding. Before I get to condescending though, I must say that Dying God turned out not anywhere near as craptacular as you might think. As sleazy as this movie could have been it managed to keep the lions share of its stupider gore offscreen, leaving it to the imagination, while the rest is shown in R-but-not-overly-graphic fashion. Also lets get one thing clear hear before I go to much farther, this is an indie flick. Low-budget, terrible sound, and oddly random gore (read - buckets of fake blood), pretty much just how indie horror fans like it.

And to be honest, this is who the film caters to. French director Fabrice Lambot crafted a picture filled with forced acting and uninteresting dialogue. Many plot points and actions of the characters happen just because, and little sympathy is felt for any of the characters. By the time this movie is over at least 10 whores are dead and Fallon’s rag tag army of pimps are all dead too. There are plenty of dead bodies on the floor when all said and done, which in this case is how a movie like this should be, that's the aim here.

Much of the stories main premise is a pitiful explanation of Sean Fallon’s goings on, making much of the mayan god bit almost a side story. What we know is some (surprisingly alive) mayan guy is hiding this “god” that keeps killing people, oh and wheelchair bound pimp Chance (Lance Henriksen) shows up midway with the last girl to be kidnapped and the only decent acting in the movie. The tone of this film is comical in premise but takes itself way to seriously, the pacing is also an issue but I digress. If your in on this package your already clicked to the bottom and ordered, otherwise you’ve passed.

All in all Dying God doesn’t excite but it doesn’t make me turn it off either. Depressingly, this movie is only worth anything in the eyes of its only demographic. The blatant nudity and copious gore will most defiantly interest some. But there is far to little else to care for unless you are solely into the indie horror thing. Which if you are you could get at least a kick or two out of this one, if your willing to swallow the entrance fee. DVD is widescreen and special features include a trailer, pick it up on Amazon if you're so willing.
