Concert Review: Steve Miller Band & The Doobie Brothers LIVE @ The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles June 20, 2013

70's rockers and FM radio mainstays Steve Miller Band and The Doobie Brothers took the stage last night to a sold out crowd at Los Angeles' world famous Greek Theatre.

The Doobie Brothers opened the show with original members Tom Johnston  and Patrick Simmons looking and sounding great.  Johnston in tight t-shirt and jeans looked like a guy in his 40's rather than someone a few months from mandatory retirement age and Simmons is still rocking his trademark long hippie hair.  Also in tow was guitarist John McFee who has been a member since 1979.

The band tore through a 75 minute set filled with such hits as "Rockin' Down The Highway," "China Grove," "Black Water," "Takin' It To The Streets" and many more.  Johnston and Simmons have been touring for over 40 years and haven't lost a step.  They continue to play with an exuberance that is often missing from bands half their age.

After a 1/2 hour intermission the Steve Miller Band hit the stage to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their first platinum selling album "The Joker."  Miller who will turn 70, was in fine form and gave the audience exactly what they wanted to hear... the hits!

Running through a 19 song set list in 90 minutes Miller played all of his #1 hits: "The Joker," "Rock'n Me" and "Abracadabra" plus 5 songs from the aforementioned "The Joker" album and many many more.

Miller is no longer backed by the original "Steve Miller Band" because many of them have passed away or retired. But that's okay because the draw has always been the group's name sake who continues to please audiences with his effortless bluesy pop guitar playing and his sing-a-long tunes.

If this show comes to your town go out and buy a ticket because song for song this is a double bill that gives you your money's worth.
