Let's just cut to the chase... if you want to see a band that has been performing for over 30 years and who are still at the top of their game then go see HEART in concert.
Last night the legendary sister duo of Ann and Nancy Wilson brought their band to the Greek Theatre in Southern California for the 1st night of a 2 night stand for what is being billed as the "Heartbreaker Tour."
Backed by the current incarnation of their band HEART, Ann and Nancy opened their set with a 5-song flourish that was one of the strongest I have ever seen! While most bands would save their best songs for the end of the show or even the encore, the Wilson sisters opened with arguably their most popular song... "Barracuda" and then followed it up with "Heartless," "What About Love?," "Magic Man" and "Kick It Out!"
I don't know many bands in their 4th decade of performing who can still open a show that strongly. If the curtain would have come down after the 5th song I would have been a satisfied customer. But remember, this is HEART, so there was definitely more to come.
At the conclusion of their 14 song set, HEART was joined on stage by opening act "Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience" to close the show with a 5 song Led Zeppelin tribute set that ended with Ann Wilson nailing the classic Led Zep tune "Stairway To Heaven." Just when you thought classic rock radio had ruined that song for you, along comes John Bonham's son on drums and Ann Wilson on vocals to prove you wrong.
If there is truly never going to be a proper Led Zeppelin reunion then I would suggest that Ann, Nancy, Jason, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page just head out on the road as a 5-piece and give music fans one last chance to hear the LZ classic catalogue LIVE!!
Until my wish is granted, concert goers can continue to check out "Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience" opening for HEART and the Wilson sisters flying the Led Zep flag as they have done their entire career by covering such LZ tunes as "Battle Of Evermore."
For most of you it might have "been a long time since you rock and rolled" but thanks to HEART and JBLZE, for me it was just a few short hours ago!
Drumroll please... 10 out of 10 drumsticks!!!
