Write Up : Bioshock

As you all know, Bioshock came out and well, to be honest if you want a review go somewhere else. If the 96% average on Gamerankings doesn't convince you then nothing I say will. What I'm here to talk about is the game itself, the dilemmas it's story presents and overall just a suggestion that games really are a viable form of art, despite what Roger Ebert has to say.

The first thing I need to tell you is I can't talk about this game without HEAVY SPOILERS so I suggest that if you have not finished the game, you are doing yourself a great disservice to read this. So from here on out, I'm puting this in "invisotext" so highlight it to read.

The first thing I want to talk about is a question I asked myself after I finished the game. Who was the real villain here? Was it Andrew Ryan? No, I wouldn't think so. Crazy yes, single minded, yes but evil? I don't think so. Andrew Ryan held to the belief that there were people and then there were great people. He was a great person and thus was entitled to create what he saw fit. He thought that by creating Rapture, he was creating a perfect world. When you have your encounter with him it's even more evident. He forced you to kill him to prove a point. That unlike you, he was not a slave. He was a man of conviction to the nth degree.

Was the villain Fontaine/Atlas? Yes, he created you. Yes he did some horrible things but he was not that dissimilar to Ryan. He also felt that he alone should be in control of his own destiny. But instead of wanting to create the perfect world, free of morality and people telling him what to do, it was greed. You could make a case that greed of a sort is what drove Ryan but Fontaine was more blatent. He wanted ADAM, he wanted power and he wanted to rule. He did some evil things, but I don't think he was any more or less evil then Ryan.

Were you the villain? Controlled and created as you were? I guess it depends on the ending you got. I myself saved the sisters and got the good ending. The one where you take the sisters to the surface and let them have a normal life and in turn become a family. I wouldn't say thats greedy or selfish at all. A noble ending. Now I watched the "bad" ending on youtube and I have to say thats much more along the lines of what Fontaine wanted. I would say that ending is just as evil as him. The ending is you take all the ADAM from the sisters and then bring the splicers up to the surface and hijack a nuclear submarine with intent of taking over the surface world as well.

Personally, I would say the only real villain was Dr. Tenenbaum. She knew what she was doing with the sisters and ADAM. She realized what she was doing was wrong and yet she still did it. She is the one character that really sets the whole thing in motion. Without her discovery and work on ADAM, Fontaine never would have come to power, they never would have created you and Rapture wouldn't have collapsed as quickly as it did (although I have a feeling it would have eventually).
She wasn't as delusional as Ryan or Fontaine. She just had no morals at all and despite knowing and being very aware, she still went ahead.

I feel the most sorry for Diane McClintock. She was neglected by Ryan and duped (and killed) by Fontaine. She (and Jack the main character) were the definition of pawns and suffered for it.

That's all for spoilers. All I want to say is that games, like books and movies and music CAN make you feel things, can tell you a compelling, multi layered story and can effect you emotionally. All of that stuff up above that I just wrote was because a "video game" brought the subject to light. I think this is one of those games that should be not just ripped through because you get to shoot badguys or do all sorts of fantastical things but maybe because it tells an interesting story. I think those that dismiss it as just a game, as just a mindless shoot-em-up, does themselves a great disservice. I think it's a good example of if you take the time to really listen and really think about any form of "art" you can come away enriched and therefore smarter and more mature for experiencing it.

Bioshock Demo now on XBLA

The Bioshock demo for Xbox 360 is now live. I suggest you download it.

I just finished the demo and to be honest, I'm so happy. So very very happy.
Allow me to explain. My opinion is that shooters are divided into 2 sub-genres. "traditional shooters" like Battlefield 2142, Halo, CounterStrike and the like. The other is what I call "Story shooters" One of my favorite "Story shooters" is a game that made me realize this division. It's called System Shock 2. It was released on PC in 1999. It redefined shooters with it's mix of adventure, Role Playing, puzzle solving and of course story.

When I first heard of Bioshock and it being billed as "the spiritual successor to System Shock 2", I scoffed. It was a very tall order to live up to in my eyes. As I saw more and more of it as it progressed through development, I got hopeful. It had potential. "But still.." I told myself, "I've gotta play it. That will be the test." Nothing they could show or tell me, despite how impressive it might be, would mean anything if it didn't feel like SS2. While that would by no means be a failure on their part or mean Bioshock isn't a good game, it would just mean SS2 would continue to sit on the top of the heap and I wait for another challenger to try to take that crown.

I'm here to tell you that I shouldn't have doubted.

I just played a demo that was SO immersive, so beautiful and so compelling that I'm not even sure how long I played it. All I know is that it ended far too soon and I want more. I want to know more about my character. I want to know what happened in Rapture to cause such chaos. I want to explore Rapture and see all of its crumbling beauty. I want to know what kind of monster would create something like a little sister. I want to know who or what a Big Daddy is. I want to know.

I'm not going to spoil a second of the demo for you. Go play it. For you PC users, the demo will be out before the end of the month.

BioShock comes out on August 21st.

Take a trip to Rapture. You won't be sorry you did...or maybe you will?

E3 Recap

Technophile back with a bunch of video game goodies for you. As some of you well know, the "new" Electronic Entertainment Expo was this last week and while it wasn't the same E3 that the industry was used to, there was a fair number of updates that got released. In this article I'm going to shine a little spotlight on some games that I think you all should keep an eye on.

First up is BIOSHOCK. This comes to us from Irrational games. BIOSHOCK is the story of the undersea city of Rapture. A scientific utopia where something has gone horribly wrong. BIOSHOCK is billed as the "spiritual successor" to System Shock 2, which is probally one of the scariest and unique FPS's done in the last few years. Below is a video showing some of highlights of the unique AI and enviroment manipulation that you can do in the game and how every encounter and situation has multiple solutions.

BIOSHOCK is releasing on August 21st for Xbox 360 and PC.

Next up is the next big Mario game from Nintendo. Named Super Mario Galaxy, it looks to be another winner. Being on the Wii, expect some crazy uses of the wiimote and all the lighthearted fun that is Mario's signature gameplay.

Super Mario Galaxy releases 11/12/07 for the Nintendo Wii

Next up is one of my personal favorites. Guitar Hero 3. As any of you that may have played the first two know, Guitar Hero puts you in the role of a rock god. With the fantastic guitar controller, this new installment brings new songs, boss battles against real guitar gods like Slash and new multiplayer modes. It will also have online multiplayer on the consoles that support it as well as a completely redone UI and graphic design.

Guitar Hero 3 comes out November of this year for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PS2.

Here is a game I think will be hard to beat in the next year. Assassin's Creed.
I'll just show you the video. I can't even put into words how amazing this game is to me.

Assassin's Creed releases September 25 2007 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Unfortunatly, there wasn't too much released about the next installment of Smash Bros . Dubbed Super Smash Bros Brawl, it looks like yet another awesome installment of the smash bros series. I'm gonna link a short video and then a link to the smash bro's dojo website where they release new info every day mon-fri. Enjoy.

Smash Bros Dojo (official site)

Super Smash Bro's Brawl releases December 3rd 2007 for the Nintendo Wii.

Metal Gear Solid 4. That should be all I need to say. If you are not familiar with the genius that is Hideo Kojima then you need to go rent Solid 1-3 and familiarize yourself. Watch this amazing video.

MGS4 is coming out March 1 2008 for the PS3.

Now, this is just a small small sampling of what was shown a E3. I didn't even touch on Rock Band, World in Conflict, The Force Unleashed, as well as the hundreds of other games that got shown there. No matter what you like, there is some big big stuff coming out this next year. It's a good time to be a gamer (as it always is!)

(thanks to gametrailers.com for being awesome)
