Garon's Top Ten Albums of 2012!

As heard on, Pop Culture Beast presents SHOW!  For full commentary head over to iTunes and subscribe to the SHOW!

10.
-TIE-
Try as I might, I could not choose between these two albums.  They're both great, unique, and addicting albums.

Fun. - Some Nights

Delta Rae - Carry The Fire

9.

Passion Pit - Gossamer

So good.

8.

Taylor Swift - Red

Another great album from Taylor Swift, not quite as strong as Speak Now but still more wonderful music from her.

7.

Ellie Goulding - Halcyon

She went from someone I'd never heard of to taking over my ipod.

6.

Freelance Whales - Diluvia

SUCH a great album.  Do yourself a favor and get their stuff.  You'll love it.  And I apologize for calling them Freestyle Whales on the podcast.

5.

Jay Brannan - Rob Me Blind.

If he isn't one of the best singer/songwriters out there right now then I don't know what I am talking about.

4.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist

I bought this album to show support for a hip-hop artist brave enough to put out a song like Same Love and then come out and defend the teacher who was suspended for playing it in class.  I didn't expect to have one of the best albums of the year on my hands, and one of my favorite hip hop albums ever.

3.

Shiny Toy Guns - III

Another album that came out of nowhere.  A welcome return and a brilliant comeback release.

2.

Frank Ocean - Channel Orange

This guy is on pretty much every top ten list and deserves it.  This might be the most important hip/hop release in years not just from his personal life but because it's just that damn good.

1.

Flobots - The Circle in the Square

I've been listening to and talking about this album since it's release months ago.  The first time I heard it turned into fifth time I heard it because I could not turn it off.  Lyrically brilliant, musically stellar, important, entertaining, smart, unique.  Top of their game.  Do yourself a favor and buy this.

Concert Review: Jay Brannan - I Suck At Life Tour!

Last night made for an incredible night of music as Jay Brannan continued his "I Suck At Life" Tour and took the stage following two fantastic opening acts: Civalias and Terra Naomi.

The crowd was ready for a great show, and a surprising mix of people. They were pumped and primed and ready to sing along, which they did plenty of.

These three acts together were a perfect blend. Civalias kicked off the show, followed by the stunning Terra Naomi, and finally the main event: Jay Brannan.

Click the Rawr! for the full review!

Civilias kicked off the show with some great songs from his EP. If I had to classify him I'd say an A
merican Damien Rice with a bit of Coldplay thrown in for good measure. I had never heard of him before and when I noticed he had a cello player in his band I was instantly interested. I'm hoping we get to review his album and are able to feature him more here because he is going to explode soon.

Civalias only played for a short while but they played through their entire EP and I enjoyed every song. He did a couple numbers alone and with his full band.

It's always great to go to a show for an artist you love and discover someone brand new to listen to. Such is the case with Civalias. It was pretty much instant fandom for me.

Check out his myspace for more information. I really think he will be huge.

Next up was Terra Naomi. What can be said about her? She's amazing. She played a couple songs on keyboards but the majority of the performance was just her and her guitar. This really showed off just how great her voice is. It was a gorgeous and fun show. The highlight of which was her stirring performance of "Say It's Possible." This song is her song but Jay Brannan has included it on his recent covers album. Between the two of them it's almost like two different songs. Last night though, Terra hit it out of the park and sent chills down my spine. Such a brilliant and emotional song. I'm also hoping to be able to feature Terra's upcoming albums here. She has an acoustic CD and a studio LP coming out soon so keep an eye here for more info on those. If you get a chance to see her perform jump on it. She performs at the Hotel Cafe here in Los Angeles (in fact she has a show on August 1) so head out and see her.

Check out her official site for more info!

At last, Jay Brannan. The crowd was ready for him and by the time he took the stage it seemed to have tripled in size.

The last time I saw Jay in concert was at the El Rey a year ago and the crowd at the bar was just yammering away during the show. It was extremely annoying. Here at The Roxy, that wasn't an issue. I heard some chatter a couple times but it wasn't at all taking away from the show.

I have to say that I don't think there is another artist that is as connected with their fans as Jay Brannan is and that is clearly evident during his show. His shows are comfortable and conversational and every song is a work of art. If you look around at the faces in the crowd, they are absolutely enthralled with him and rightly so. His voice and his music are simply captivating.

It's no secret that I am a fan of Jay Brannan. I named his album goddamned the best of the year (2008) and to be honest had it come out this year so far it'd be the best again. His latest album, In Living Cover, is an exquisite collection of cover songs and last night songs from both albums were on display. He is a consummate performer who sits on that stage with just his guitar and his voice and his words and for that hour and a half (give or take) everyone in the room belonged to him.

He was clearly glad to be there, mentioning how excited he was to be performing on the same stage as one of his favorites, Lisa Loeb. It was truly a great experience to see. Each song sounded incredible. I don't think there is anyone who sounds better right now. There is a reason I keep returning to his albums. I love these songs and seeing them live is a whole new experience. I'm not one to see bands over and over again, except in certain cases. For Jay, I'll go everytime he comes to town.

The crowd sang along with nearly every song. One that they did not sing along with was the title track from goddamned. During this song, which is a scathing track about religion, the crowd was completely silent and I don't think anyone even moved (outside of the occasional snap of cameras). It was a riveting performance of a haunting song and just further proved how into Jay his fans are.

Throughout the show, he cracked jokes, told a story about a TSA agent's desire for happy songs, credited Terra Naomi for inspiring him to start making his YouTube videos (which continues today), which in turn pretty much launched his music career, and played some amazing amazing songs.

He even performed a song requested by someone in the audience, "Straight Outta Compton."

I don't have a track list for you but he did my two favorite songs off In Living Cover: "Beautifully" and "Good Mother," along with fan favorites like "Can't Have It All" and "Soda Shop" plus many more.

From the time Jay Brannan steps onto the stage, you're his. I can attribute this to two possible things. The first is that he is nothing if not real. He doesn't try to be perfect, in fact, he embraces his flaws. He never tries to be anything other that who and what he is and does not apologize for his feelings. It's a refreshing honesty that is woefully missing from the mainstream and is a major part of his music.

The next is the songs themselves. You realize these may be his songs he is singing, but these stories, these experiences, can belong to anyone. He could be singing your story. Your life. I think this is one reason why his fans, myself included, are so loyal to him. He is their voice.

And what a voice it is.

Music Review: Jay Brannan - In Living Cover

Jay Brannan is back with a 9 track EP, In Living Cover, which I have been mistakenly calling In Living Color for the past month.

Anyway, loyal readers of the site will know that we named Jay's previous album goddamned the best album of 2008. I am pleased to say that this EP is just as good.

This time, Jay has given the fans something they have been asking for. In Living Cover features seven cover songs and two originals. Every single cover takes the songs to a new level. Jay has a gift to infuse every song of his with such emotion that it is impossible not to be captivated by what you are hearing. That gift is on full display here as he tackles, and in most cases, surpasses the original songs.

He's included fan favorites like Jann Adren's "Good Mother," and Terra Naomi's, "Say It's Possible" plus 2 original tracks, "Beautifully" and "Drowning."

"Beautifully" is my favorite song on the album but honestly, the entire thing is perfect. Jay Brannan has crafted yet another brilliant album for us. His voice and his guitar playing are top notch and he delivers a gorgeous disc that is wrought with emotion.

He takes amazing songs like "The Freshmen" and "Zombie" and makes them his own. Particularly "Zombie" which was a harder song when performed by The Cranberries. Here Jay tones it down and it sounds more like a plea for action rather than the political insistence of the original. It's his passion for the music that just oozes from everything he does. We get Jay's haunting voice, his guitar, and a violin and the effect is mesmerizing.

He even takes on the greats like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. They should both be proud of his interpretations here. They're fantastic.

I had only just heard of him a few months before goddamned was released and in that short time he has become my favorite male artist.

I just can't get enough of his music and In Living Cover is no exception.

Jay is going on a tour to support the release so be sure to check him out. Tour dates are below! We'll have a review of his Los Angeles stop in a few weeks.

In the meantime, do yourself a favor and pick up In Living Cover and his debut goddamned. Both are prime examples of a brilliant singer/songwriter at work.

Best of '08: Music

2008 was a pretty great year for music and this only made it harder for me to compile a best of list. The bulk of the great stuff this year seemed to come from outside of the mainstream. This is evident by the appearance of only three, maybe four, "mainstream" artists appearing on my top 10 list.

Before we get to the list I wanted to point out that I decided not to do a worst of list this year. I really don't think it's necessary to point out who was the worst *cough*lil wayne*cough*. I also decided to break up the best off stuff a bit more than last time. So you'll see a best of games, movies (hopefully soon), books, podcast, etc each day this week.

Okay, business is out of the way. Let's see the albums that make up the Best in Music for 2008!

#10

I always make room for one big pop album on the list (last year was Britney Spears pseudo comeback album Blackout) and this year belongs to Katy Perry. There is no denying the utter catchiness of this album's singles so far. I Kissed A Girl is near impossible not to enjoy. The entire disc is packed with great songs.

#9

Adele - 19

Hailing from England, Adele delivered one of the most surprising albums of the year. I was all set to chock her up as a Joss Stone wanna be blues singer (how's that for journalistic objectivity?) but when I popped the disc in I was captivated from the first note. She has such a pure and elegant voice that pretty much knocks Joss Stone out of the water. Her album is gorgeous and got a significant sales boost after her SNL appearance.

#8

Kings of Leon - Only By The Night

This is another album that caught me by surprise. I hadn't heard of Kings of Leon before and was made curious by their appearance on SNL. I can now consider myself a fan. This album is full of great rock tunes, both fast and mid tempo. I love the kind of album that transcends mood and environment. Something you can just pop in and enjoy. Only By The Night fits that bill perfectly.

#7

Creaky Boards - Brooklyn Is Love

This is most likely a band you've never heard of. Too be honest, I hadn't heard of them until a few months ago when the band caused some uproar by pointing out the similarities between Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" and their song "The Songs I Didn't Write". I can't say anything came of it except publicity and a fantastic album full of quirky pop music. This is a band that is definitely worth checking out.

#6

Kanye West - 808's & Heartbreak

Kanye West's stunning album 808's & Heartbreak was probably one of the biggest surprises to me. It's pretty brave as one of the biggest rap artists of our generation releasing an album with hardly any rap at all. That said, it's the best hip hop (is it even really hip hop though? Kanye calls it 'Pop Art') album of the year. Some people got down on him for utilizing Auto Tune but I think it sounds great. The album is really quite emotional and everything down with the record accentuates that. I hope I don't get an angry blog about Kanye being at #6 on this list.

#5

The Submarines - Honeysuckle Weeks

The Submarines are a band you don't know but in fact really do know. At least by sound. You'll remember their awesome song "You Me and the Bourgeoisie" from the IPhone Applications commercial. Honeysuckle Weeks includes that song as well as nine other songs of alt pop gold.

#4

Okkervil River - The Stand Ins

Indie Folk Rock at its best. I can't really say more than that. It's a luminous collection of songs that I've been addicted to since I first put the album on. A great collection of eclectic sounding music. A lot of people are put off by anything related to folk but Okkervil River are extremely accessible to any music lover.

#3

Margot & The Nuclear So And So's - Animal/Not Animal

Technically, it's two albums. Not Animal is the label's choice of songs while Animal is the bands choice. Honestly, it's two full albums of amazing music from what is probably my favorite band right now so the more the merrier.

#2

Jake Walden - Alive and Screaming

A gorgeous collection of emotionally rich and touching songs. Alive and Screaming is a prime example why Jake Walden is one of the most promising new artists to come along in a while. End to End, this album is amazing.

#1

The Pop Culture Beast Best Album of 2008

Jay Brannan - goddamned

Hands down, Far and away the best album released this year belongs to Jay Brannan. There is nothing out that compares to the sheer beauty and raw emotion on this disc. It is an incredible piece of work that I cannot get enough of. It makes you cry and laugh and think and fall in love with every song. It's the kind of album that makes you want to hunt down every possible live performance or you tube song you can get your hands on. goddamned is an example of a brilliant singer/songwriter at work and leaves you begging to hear more. This is undeniably the greatest album I have heard this year.

***

That's it gang. My picks for the best albums of the year. I was surprised when I was going through all this that the list was so indie heavy. I think it is a good list though and if it introduces even one person to some new music they acn enjoy than I am certainly satisfied.

I wanted to point out a few albums that didn't make the list but certainly deserve some recognition as they were pretty great in their own right.

Honerable Mentions:

Janet Jackson - Discipline: Her best album since the best album of her career, Velvet Rope.

Coldplay - Viva La Vida: Coldplay would be hard pressed to make a bad album and Viva La Vida is no exception.

Lucinda Williams - Little Honey: Lucinda is the queen of alt country if you ask me and this album is another example of her greatness.

Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs: Death Cab...honestly, this album just barely missed the list. Stunning album from a stellar band.

Jason Mraz - We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things: This guy does not get near the credit he deserves. This album features my absolute favorite single of the year "I'm Yours" and the beautiful "Details In The Fabric"

Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue: The 2nd solo album from the Rilo Kiley front woman. She could sing the phone book and I'd be first in line to hear it. The large amount of guest stars only boost this albums appeal.

Review: Joshua Radin - Simple Times

As I type this, Joshua Radin's brand new album Simple Times is sitting pretty in the #1 spot on the iTunes album chart. I didn't even have to write about how good the album was for it to get the notoriety it deserves. Assuming little ol' me even has that kind of pull.

I first heard of Joshua Radin a few years ago courtesy of Zach Braff. I've been a fan ever since. His first album We Were Here was a great debut and he followed it up with the beautiful duet "Paperweight" with Schuyler Fisk (Remember that name. She is amazing.) on soundtrack to Zach Braff's The Last Kiss.

Here we are a couple years later with Simple Times. No sign of "sophomore slump" here. This album is even better that his debut. Simple Times is one of those albums you want to toss on the car stereo and just ride along with. The kind where you can be hanging out or traveling with friends and just let the music fill that comfortable silence. It speaks enough for everyone.

He seems to have improved in every aspect here. Lyrically, musically, vocally, everything shifts up a notch from his previous album. From the fantastic duet with my all time favorite singer Patty Griffin (You Got Growin' Up To Do) to the upbeat and chipper "Vegetable Car" (how no one has used the phrase 'Lisa Loeb Glasses' before is beyond me) Simple Times is gorgeous record.

I can't find a single flaw in the record. It delivers everything I want to hear from Joshua Radin. Sweet harmonies, especially those that feature Schuyler Fisk (who simply cannot release her record soon enough), touching and poignant lyrics, all delivered with the utmost of respect for his art. You can feel the energy and love that goes into the music he is making and it is infectious. Note: I apparently am mistaken in thinking that the lovely Schuyler Fisk sings on this album, she did contribute to his last album but it seems the voice I am hearing on Simple Times is Meiko!

Simple Times doesn't hit stores until September 30, but it is available now on iTunes so I'd get to clicking over there.

So far this year I've heard brilliant albums by Jay Brannan, Joshua Radin, Matt Bauer, and more. If this keeps up I'm going to have a rough time making a top album of 2008 list!

Jay Brannan's goddamned Reviewed!!

goddamned is a stripped down record filled with Brannan's silky smooth voice and acoustic guitar (not to mention the strings that pop up periodically).

It's a brutally honest instantly relatable album full of some amazing songs about love, heartbreak, living as a gay man, dating, and sex.

It's probably one of the best albums by a gay artist that I have ever heard.

Jay Brannan puts feelings that we've all felt one time or another into his songs and it makes it almost like he is singing about you. There are universal songs here that anyone, gay or straight, can relate to.

It's a flawless record. Not a bad song among the 11 tracks. Jay Brannan's lyrics are just amazing. In Bowlegged and Starving he sings, "I have my laptop for pleasure and my guitar for pain..." there is just something about the way he sings that line that just hits home.

One of the highlights of the album is the title track. It's about as epic as possible for an acoustic folk album. It's a song about the state of the world and religions. It is the kind of song you just want to close your eyes and absorb. Listening to this song isn't enough you need to feel it. He sings, "Mary and Muhammad are screaming through the clouds for you to lay your goddamned arms down, rip your bigot roots from the earth and salt the goddamned ground." To call it an intense song is a mild understatement. He sings it with such passion you can't help but be affected by it.

With goddamned, Brannan has given us a pure album untouched by corporate influence and it is a dream album. It's an album that I have not been able to stop listening to since I received it. Powerhouse artists like Alanis Morrisette and Coldplay cannot come close to making an album like this. This is an album Rufus Wainwright wishes he could have put out.

As it stands right now, goddamned is the album to beat for the best album of 2008.

goddamned will be available in stores on July 15. You can get it online starting July 1. I would not miss this album. You won't regret it.

Here is the track list for the album:

1 - Can't Have It All

2 - Half-boyfriend

4 - Death Waltz

5 - At First Sight

6 - Housewife

7 - goddamned
