Seven Psychopaths Movie Review

The third film from English director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges), Seven Psychopaths is violent, fun, and hilarious.

In the same vein of the hysterical In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths is a fantastic ride from start to finish. The ensemble cast includes Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Wood Harrelson, Tom Waits, and Christopher Walken. It is no doubt that Farrell is the main character in the film, but Rockwell is definitely the star. He steals the show by delivering a phenomenal performance and has some of the best blunt and brutally honest lines in the film.

The movie is full of fun and witty dialogue, which really makes this movie stand out above the rest. I thought the film had a great look and vision to it. Obviously, the film is fairly character driven and the psychopaths are really great!

I don't want to give too much away, but the plot involves a dog-napping scam, an alcoholic screenwriter, rabbits, violence, and of course, seven psychopaths.

My only issue with the film is that I thought it was a little too long in parts, but the other scenes make up for this lull.

The Movie Review: Zombieland

Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland is one of the best, funniest movies in a long time. With a brilliant cast, perfectly crafted screenplay, and inventive direction Zombieland is a truly fun and memorable movie-going experience.

Our hero on our journey through Zombieland is Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg, fresh from Adventureland, in another brilliantly nuanced, if slightly familiar, performance) one of the last surviving humans after most of the world has been taken over by blood-thirsty, flesh-eating zombies. He has a firm set of rules that he sticks to (cardio, seat belts, not being a hero) which has made him survive longer than most. Columbus is trying to get back home to where his maybe-still-human family may be. Along the way he meets Tallahasse (Woody Harrelson) who, like Columbus, is just trying to stay alive and human as long as he can, and find a Twinkie along the way, if possible. They find two more travelers in Wichita and Little Rock (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, respectivley) two sisters who are trying to get to Pacific Playland, an amusement park just outside of Los Angeles.

Zombieland just may be the perfect comedy/horror film. It has an amazing balance of hilarity and terror that separates it from other films in this genre. Really one of the most brilliant things about the film is the screenplay. Written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick the movie does the difficult task of creating a situation where an audience member will wonder about what they would do, how they would act in a situation like this. Not only does the movie capture the way that people would carry on, and the things people would do if there was no more worry about the law, but it does it in an intelligent and extremely funny way. Reese and Wernick brilliantly walk the line of showing some outrageous moments, while still making the movie not conform to typical zombie movie cliches and they infect in the audience a feeling of fantasy that there are limitless possibilities.

The cast doesn't exactly break any new ground, each of them sticking to familiar territory; Harrelson is the funny-tough guy, Eisenberg the awkward virgin, Breslin the little girl full of life, and Emma Stone the sarcastic irresistible one. However these particular actors are the best at playing their respective types, and so it is never annoying, or unoriginal. Each performer has a real knack for taking the dialogue and making the most out of it, making it their own.

For anybody that read my review of this year's Orphan (available here), you will know that I have been losing my faith in the horror genre for a long time. Zombieland is so good that it has instilled in me the hope that horror is still alive, it is still possible and can still be inventively done. While by no means a great movie, or a movie that is going to go down in history as being particularly exceptional, this is a movie that is capable of making an audience member have a good time; it accomplishes the difficult task of making a viewer feel like a kid again. I have not had a better time at the movies this year.

No Country For Old Men is a film I've been wanting to see for a while and when I got the chance to check out this bluray I jumped at it.

I should start by saying that I am not exactly well versed in the filmography of The Coen Brothers. I've seen a few of their films, not nearly all of them, certainly not enough to consider myself a fan or not. I loved The Big Lebowski and Fargo, seem to remember liking Raising Arizona but I haven't seen it in years. I enjoyed The Man Who Wasn't There, couldn't stomach The Ladykillers, and really really did not enjoy Burn After Reading. The rest I haven't seen, but I do want to. So I guess you could say The Coens are hit or miss with me.

So, I popped in No Country For Old Men with no expectations (except for all the Oscars) and no preconceptions based on the filmmakers previous works. The end result? I loved it and it takes its place firmly as my favorite of all films from the Coens that I have seen so far.

The story follows a man (played brilliantly by Josh Brolin), who discovers the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong. He finds and takes a case full of cash, in effect triggering a vicious cat and mouse game as he is hunted by a maniacal hit man (Oscar winner Javier Bardem), a country sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones), and eventually another hit man (Woody Harrelson).

It's a Coen Brothers movie so you can be sure that there is more to it that just that basic plot description. I just don't want to reveal to much despite the film being out for over a year.

It really is an incredible film with performances that are nothing short of brilliant from everyone in the cast. It's enthralling. I couldn't take my eyes from the screen. It is the first movie in a long time that I wanted to watch again immediately after I finished it, which actually happened again with another film which will be reviewed in the next day or so.

It's a good thing I couldn't take my eyes of this movie because on bluray, it looks spectacular. Pristine picture, deep sound, you're embraced by the film with the bluray format. I didn't have the pleasure of seeing the film in a theater but the experience could not have been much better.

The 2-Disc Collector's Edition is absolutely jam packed with extras. Featurettes, behind the scenes, and an absolute plethora of Q & As and interviews. I don't think there is anything else to know about this movie that you can't learn from these extras.

This set is an absolute must have for fans of The Coens and of the film itself. Miramax gives us a great presentation of the film with numerous supplements to keep even the most avid fan satisfied.

There is a reason this movie won Best Picture. It's because it is the best picture of that year. Check it out for yourself.
