Aquaman Vol. 1: The Trench Review

Get all of your snickering out of the way now because Aquaman in the New 52 kicks ass!

The story does a great job of almost putting Aquaman in our world, people are always making fun of him and don't understand his powers. He proves he's a badass by deflecting bullets off of his skin, flipping an armored car with his trident, and even eating fish!

Paired with his queen, Mera, Aquaman must fight a deadly unknown army from the depths of the Trench, who have come to feed upon the flesh of the land dwellers. In Volume 1, Aquaman also must rely on help from his past to decode an ancient message that threatens the safety of Atlantis.

This is one of the best New 52 titles released! Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis (Blackest Night) were the perfect duo to handle this title! Johns, DC's golden boy, pokes fun at all of the old Aquaman jokes and shows you why he's awesome!

I like the depth (no pun intended) of the characters in this story, which is one thing I definitely did not expect to get. Aquaman has a tough time finding where he fits in. He's unwelcome on land and he doesn't feel at home in Atlantis, but no matter which one is in danger, he springs to save it without question and without being too whiny about it.

As strange as it sounds, Aquaman Vol. 1: The Trench gets a 10 out of 10 Tridents!

As far as these latest DC Universe animated films go Green Lantern: First Flight comes in at number two. It's certainly better than Superman: Doomsday and Batman: Gotham Knight but it's not quite as good as Wonder Woman.

I had high hopes for this being a recent Green Lantern addict. I was certain this movie was going to be fantastic.

Turns out, it's only a decent shot at what could have been gold.

First Flight is basically an origin story mixed with some recent story points from the comics. It comes across a bit rushed though. It seems like it was made to be a quick rapid fire film to launch a potential franchise, which I guess is fine. I just wish they did a better job of it.

Geoff Johns is a busy guy but why on earth didn't he write this movie? It seems like he has restored Green Lantern to one of the best books on the shelves but also one of the best characters. I feel like this movie would have been on an entirely different level had he been the one behind the script. Instead, it seems a bit lazy.

The animation is great. I am really enjoying the style they are using for these movies. They're visually interesting with some great character designs.

One thing that shocked me is how violent this one is. The fight scenes are just brutal. Probably less so that what we saw in Wonder Woman, but there is one scene in particular where I audibly reacted to a characters demise. PG-13 indeed!

The voice acting is okay for the most part. It's nothing to write home about to be honest. I will say that I didn't recognize a lot of the bigger names with the exception of Kurtwood Smith who has a rather recognizable voice. That's probably a good thing. I'd rather not be thinking of the actor voicing these characters over the film.

The disc is loaded with special features, which I detailed previously. The most interesting are Geoff John's discussing the Mythology of Green Lantern and the look at Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.

Bottom line is this: Green Lantern: First Flight is a decent animated film. It has some great fights, great action, and is a pretty fun watch. I really wanted more though. I wanted to hear more about will power and learn that Hal Jordan has a tremendous amount of it. Fans of the character should check it out. It's definitely worth the time to watch it even if it's not perfect.

DC Comics Movie updates

Warner Bros. and DC Comics are finally going to be kicking their comic property movies into gear with an expected four films released over the next 3 years, including the next Batman movie. They've also announced a new Superman movie that will reboot the franchise much like the recent Incredible Hulk. I wonder how Bryan Singer feels about that.

Most notably is the apparent Axing of the Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League films. Warners has decided to go the Marvel route and release films with several characters and then release a Justice League film down the road. Projects are already in development for The Flash, Green Lantern (If they were smart they'd let Geoff Johns write this), Wonder Woman, and Green Arrow! Ask me, a Green Arrow/Black Canary movie would be awesome.

I'm curious as to what they do with Superman and who they put behind the camera.

More information is expected in the next month or so.
