31 Days of Scream-O-Ween! - Dead Souls

By Garon Cockrell

Scream Factory isn’t just about the classics.  They’ve also brought us some more contemporary titles.    Well two so far.  The first of which is a film that first aired on Chiller called Dead Souls.    Don’t let that scare you off (like it almost did me) though.

Dead Souls
The Film:

Dead Souls tells the story of a young man who learns not only that he is adopted but that he is the last survivor of a horrific mass murder.  He finds himself in possession of his family’s old home so he moves and in doing so unleashes the horrors that cursed his family 18 years before.

I’ll admit I had my apprehensions about this one.  Being a TV movie carries a certain stigma and with Dead Souls it appears that my apprehension was misplaced.  It’s a well-acted and well done little horror film that I enjoyed.
It’s not perfect and it’s not going to go down in the pantheon of horror classics but it is a movie you won’t regret watching.

The Disc:
I don’t think Scream Factory had much to do with this one.   It’s a newer movie so the picture shouldn’t have any annoying artifacts or issues to deal with and it doesn’t.  It’s another nice disc from SF and while it doesn’t have the history one might want from a release like this it does coming with some nice features, even if they’re a bit by the numbers.

The Features:
  • Audio Commentary
  • Bloopers
  • Tour of the Set
  • TV Spots

The Specs:
  • 1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1)
  • DTS HD Master Audio 5.1
  • Original Release: 2013
  • Runtime: 92 Minutes
  • Rating: Not Rated

Final Grades:
Story:  B / Interesting story with some nice twists/
Presentation:  A / Looks great as it should since it’s a newer film.
Scare Factor:  B / Some good jumps make for a good late night watch.
Gore Factor:  B / Pretty good for a TV movie.  I’m sure the added 7 minutes helped with the gore.
Repeat view-ability: C / It’s good yes, but it’s not a classic.  I enjoyed it but I doubt it’ll be one I’ll watch again.
