BLOG ZINE! More Boot(y) Than A Twerking Contest!

by Kari Tervo

It's Friday. The zinester stalks the internet, looking to feed on zine reviews. "Hey," says the zinester. "Didn't that Kari chick at Pop Culture Beast say she was going to post a new zine review every Friday?" The zinester clicks over to Pop Culture Beast. The zinester is searching, searching, searching, circling the posts, only to find that Kari has not posted new zine reviews yet. Yet, the zinester sniffs the air, sensing that a new review post is coming. . .

Okay, I did say I would post new reviews every Friday. How about. . .Fridayish? Okay.

Here's the FAQ on this late-delivered shebang.

Let's do this!

This week, we're covering The Boot and Booty! Cuz it seemed clever to review two zines with similar names! And both are comic-book zines! It's like, fate.

The Boot #5 concerns The Adventures of Duck & Cunning Cat. This comic follows the adventures of a content, low-maintenance duck and a high-strung cat struggling to keep up with the Joneses (both represented by rubber stamps). Cat eventually becomes paranoid and unglued after receiving a mysterious gift. But both characters experience a similar fate. An existential treat!

Kevin also included a creative, neat touch: The page numbers are represented by dice used as stamps. So, like, page 10 is indicated by a die showing 6 and one showing 4. Overall, The Boot #5 is a creative gem.

Booty #23

One time, almost a decade ago, I woke from a night out at some crazy club with a stunning realization through the cottony haze of hangover: Last night, I think I joined the roller derby! It turned out that promises made under the influence of three Yuenglings and a "Special" (whatever that was) are not binding obligations in the state of Pennsylvania. I was relieved.

However, after reading Booty #23, I wish I had made good on my inebriated word. Anne tours us through the fascinating world of operating as a roller derby referee. In a series of delightfully-drawn panels, Anne takes us through her answer to a common question: "So how come you don't skate [instead of reffing]?" She even lets us in on the dirty secret of post-jam elbow pad stench. Anne also shares with us other parts of her life, like how joyful she feels when she plays the game Apples to Apples, and leads us through a deeper journey on a failed relationship with a sketchy dude. Anne's drawings are fantastic, and her worldview is both good-natured and tough. Booty #23 is like catching up with a cool friend!
