31 Days of Scream-O-Ween! - Lifeforce

By Garon Cockrell

Space….Vampires.  Those two words should be enough to sell you on this movie but if they aren’t here are two more:  Tobe Hooper.  He of Funhouse (another Scream Factory title), Poltergeist, Invaders from Mars, and a little movie called The Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame.
This is another of those horror titles I missed; in fact, I’d never heard of this one, which made me all the more thrilled for it to be a Collector’s Edition.  Even better?  A longer, director approved cut.

Lifeforce
The Film:
So far Scream Factory has released two vampire flicks, The Vampire Lovers, and this sci-fi tinged Tobe Hooper classic Lifeforce.  Here we find some astronauts discovering a spaceship hidden in Hayley’s Comet.  Inside said ship is a trio of humanoid creatures trapped in some kind of stasis.  Of course there wouldn’t be a movie if they weren’t brought back!

Well barely brought back but I don’t want to spoil anything.  Suffice it to say, space vampires on earth.  Naked sexy space vampires wreaking all sorts of havoc.

The Disc:
Lifeforce undoubtedly looks better than it ever has but that doesn’t mean the picture here is flawless.  There is a little age and some picture dimness but it’s nothing that takes away from the enjoyment of the film.  The effects looks great for the most part but they can’t escape the trappings of time as they are definitely 80s effects.
That said, the disc still looks great and the film is a treat to watch.

Final Grades:
Story:  A / Again, space vampires sucking the life out of people and wreaking complete havoc.  Winner.
Presentation: B+ / Pretty great transfer with a few minor blemishes and dated effects.
Scare Factor: B / More of a sci-fi with horror elements.  The scares are few and far between.
Gore Factor:  A / Some great gore effects here including the sucked dry bodies..
Repeat view-ability:  B / I’m sure plenty of people are going to replay this over and over to see Mathilda May in all her beautiful glory but with all of the amazing other titles coming from Scream Factory, Lifeforce might not get multiple views.
