Another Earth Blu-Ray Review

Another Earth is one of those movies that intrigued me when I saw the first trailer. I was really interested in seeing it and expected something sci-fi and mind-blowing like Moon or Primer. Instead, the concept of a second Earth seemed like a sub plot buried beneath a Lifetime-esque main plot. That isn't to say that it wasn't a good film, but it just fell short of my expectations, which may have to do with the marketing.

The film involves a young girl, Rhoda (Brit Marling), who has received a scholarship to MIT and celebrates with her friends. On her way home, she wrecks into another car killing a woman and her child and putting the husband, John (William Mapoter), in a coma. She is sentenced to some jail time for drunk driving and John never finds out who killed his family since Rhoda was a minor. Afterwards she becomes a janitor and cleaning lady and seeks out John, who is now living at home. They begin to have a friendly relationship all the while reports of another Earth known as Earth-2 come into play. Rhoda enters a contest to travel to the mysterious Earth-2.

John and Rhoda's relationship is the main focal point of the movie, which really diminishes the Earth-2 story line. Like I said, the sci-fi is the backdrop of the film, but it was very well made.

The Blu-Ray combo pack has a slew of features including deleted scenes and the Science Behind Another Earth. The movie itself is well worth the watch, just don't expect a full blown sci-fi film. Another Earth is available now on Blu-Ray/DVD Comb PAck

I give Another Earth 6 out of 10 Earths!

True Blood Stars Paquin and Moyer Get Married

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer of HBO's True Blood were married on Saturday at a private residence in Malibu, California.  Guests brought presents wrapped in purple with purple bows and included Elijah Wood, Michael Emerson (Lost...'The Final Season comes out on Tuesday August 24th!!!!') and True Blood co-star Carrie Preston.

Sorry ladies and gentlemen, they're taken.  Well ladies, I guess there's always  Alexander Skarsgård or you can always dream within the fantasy world of the show.  Heck, maybe you'll find your own sessy vampire, it does take place in Louisiana and Mississippi after all.  I'm just waiting for some Texan vampires to show up.

Hating Kate

Why can’t it ever be Kate? There have been a lot of casualties on “Lost,” but Kate is never one of them.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. She’s very attractive. I’m with you on that.

But Kate is my least favorite character. From the very beginning, the writers and producers of the show tried to make her seem interesting. They hinted at a sordid past, in which she did broke the law and lived life on the run.

Then came the day when an episode aired entitled “What Kate Did.” I’m sure, for some, the opportunity to finally get Kate’s backstory was an interesting prospect. I’ll admit, I was looking forward to it, but for different reasons. I was excited about it because, once it was revealed to us, the show would stop trying to intrigue me about an essentially bland character.

Then, when we finally saw what Kate did, my disinterest turned to frustration. Because, for the better part of a season, we were meant to view Kate as some kind of badass; a tough chick who could go round and round with any of the men on the island, because she’s got a dark side that we don’t even know about.

Turns out she killed her abusive stepfather to keep him from continuing to hurt her mother.
Could there possibly be a more sympathetic, more relatable, more noble crime than that? Had Kate actually killed an innocent in cold blood- perhaps to support a drug habit or something- then we would really have something here. We would have a hardened criminal trying to redeem herself by helping her fellow island dwellers. In short, an complex character.

But, no. Instead we got somebody who is basically a decent person. And she has failed to be interesting ever since. From then on, any time a Kate-centric episode airs, I roll my eyes and soldier through it, knowing that I’m going to be told that Kate is a world-weary loner trying to outrun her past and that she’s just as interesting as Locke or Sawyer or Said.

And, as more memorable characters die around her, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that
Kate is in it for the duration. And I’m told that this is a good thing.

Oh well. I guess it could be worse. Her crime could have been stealing a loaf of bread for her starving children.

God I can't wait for this premiere. January 21 is too long. Send me a screener ABC! Please?

Guess who's coming to Lost?

Dead former CTU Agent Michelle Dessler! That's right, 24 vet Reiko Aylesworth will be joining the cast of the brilliant Lost this season! The Hollywood Reporter says Aylesworth will play Amy, a "smart and successful professional woman with a love for the outdoors who is looking for the right man." While that description is rather vague, not to mention soundiing like the plot for some defunct ABC pilot, I'm sure Reiko will bring the same level of awesomeness she's brought to 24 and even on a brief stint at E.R.
