Paramount has announced that Star Trek: The Next Generation will join the original Star Trek series on Blu-ray next year, just in time for the 25th anniversary.
More exciting is just how this is being done. Complete edits and transfers from the original negatives, recreated special effects and 7.1 sound are just the beginning. We don't even know what the special features will be yet. Every episode of the show will be presented in 1080p.
The full season sets will follow after a special Fan Favorite set called The Next Level which releases in January with a feature length version of "Encounter at Far Point," the series pilot, and two additional award winning episodes.
Gross, there's drool on my keyboard...

This is pretty much the only thing with Tyler Perry's name attached that I have any desire to watch. Not including Star Trek.

The battle of the summer movies really kicked into high gear this weekend as the second major summer blockbuster released this season, Star Trek, stood against the first, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and decidedly beat it into submission. Star Trek brought in $72.5 million, including over $7 million from Thursday night previews. Granted, this opening did not surpass Wolverine's $80 Million plus but it does seem to indicate that Star Trek has the legs to be a bigger earner overall, especially counting the whopping 63% drop for Wolverine.
Star Trek has pretty much positive reviews from everyone where as Wolverine is the exact opposite. Star Trek also had other hurdles to overcome including the stigma of its own franchise, the possible ire of die hard fans, and lackluster performing previous sequels. It looks like every one of those worries have been eliminated.
The other some what major film opening this weekend was Next Day Air which opened in sixth place with $4 million.

See that picture? That was my face when I heard what was the number one movie over the weekend. Yes, Obsessed headbutted into the top spot taking in a staggering $28.5 Million and easily making back it's $20 Million budget. It more than doubled the take of this weekends #2 movie, 17 Again which itself barely held off newcomer Fighting. They brought in $11.6 and $11.4 Million respectively. Rounding out the top five are The Soloist with 9.7 Million and Disney's Earth which pulled in $8.5 Million.
I guess the competition wasn't that great for films this week. Nothing new looked to terribly interested so I guess it makes sense that people flocked to what looks to be a shout at the screen groan fest like Obsessed.
Next week summer kicks into high gear with X-Men Origins: Wolverine. After that it's gonna be a great May with Star Trek and Terminator Salvation on deck. Let's just hope we don't have any more movies like Obession to worry about.

For me, the only reason to watch the Superbowl is for the commercials. In recent years, they've been terrible.
This year the crop of films advertising during the big game are a bit more interesting.
Confirmed films are "Angels and Demons," "Fast and Furious," "G.I. Joe," "Land of the Lost," "Monsters vs. Aliens," "Star Trek," "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "Up" with "Wolverine" and "Race To Witch Mountain" expected to be added soon.
I'll Tivo it so I can fast forward to the commercials!

Uhura and Nero. Is this movie going to be great or terrible? My money is on the former...

I'm pretty keen on this movie. This trailer got my heart beating a bit so I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Also, we had our 700th post yesterday!
I'm a little backed up on review material so watch for a slew of reviews in the next couple of days!

Paramount has announced that the upcoming Star Trek Reinvention has been delayed five months.
The movie was originally scheduled to be released this Christmas but has been bumped to next May.
This is said to allow ample time to better publicize and sell the idea of the reinvention to movie goers and fans. JJ Abrams and crew have also stated they had wanted to change some aspects of the script. They had been unable to do so due to the writer's strike. Now that that has ended and the release date changed, they should be able to make the changes they wanted.
Perhaps to add Shatner to the mix?
J.J. Abrams' Star Trek beams into theaters on star date 05.08.09.

You may remember him from Hearts in Atalantis, maybe from Alpha Dog, but you will see him soon enough starring opposite Robert Downey jr. in Charlie Bartlett.
But I am not here to discuss that movie. I am here because the latest news from The Hollywood Reporter is that Anton Yelchin will be playing Pavel Chekov in J.J. Abrams untitled Star Trek film.
And everyone is making a big deal out of it. Why? Because he is actually Russian!
O.o
Anyway, Mr. Abrams is expected to sign on bigger names to be filling in the spot of the infamous James T. Kirk, and the unknown villain.
Zachary Quinto from Heroes and Leonard Nimoy are both confirmed to be playing Mr. Spock.
Set your calendar for a Christman Day release in 2008.

Day One! Started with us getting shut out of the paramount panel. The wonderful people working this years con decided to let some giant autograph session out and where did they go? Directly into the Paramount line. So unfortunately, the news of Karen Allen officially returning to the Indiana Jones universe has broken elsewhere. As well as the news of Zachary Quinto signing on to play Spock in the JJ Abrams Star Trek prequel. It also looks as though Leonard Nimoy will be appearing in the film as well.
In Comic Book news, Michael Turner (Fathom, Shrugged, Soul Fire) dropped us some interesting tidbits regarding his future with Marvel Comics, including a 6 issue miniseries that he is doing both the cover AND the interiors for. That should be out next summer. He also hinted at an X-Men related project next year.
Tomorrow brings the WB presentations as well as the new mystery block vacated by 20th Century Fox. I'm not quite sure what is planned for that two hours but we'll see.
Pictures will be coming soon. We're still having technical issues with the cameras.
Also, hello to all the visitors coming from Dark Horizons!
More tomorrow!
