Bryan Singer Tweets Beast!

Bryan Singer tweeted a picture of Nicholas Hoult reprising Beast from his upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Guys, I think we can officially start getting excited for this movie.  I can't help it.

Bryan Singer on X-Men: Days of Future Past

Bryan Singer talked at great length with Empire Magazine about the new X-Men movie and how he is planning on bringing all of the X Franchises together.

"It's epic. I don't think people realize how big this movie's going to be. We get to bring both casts together. We've cracked it in a way that it makes sense. I had a two-hour conversation with James Cameron about time travel, string theory, multiverses and all that. You have to create your rules and stick wtih them. That's why Terminator and Back To The Future work so well. And there are certain mechanisms in X-Men, certain powers, perceptions and characters, that make this possible."

He also talks about finding a balance between staying faithful to the source material and creating a film of this magnitude.

"It has a lot of aspects of the comic. The actual comic of Days Of Future Past had a whole ton of stuff going on, so it’s like any of these things; you have to distill it. But I think the fans will be pleased that some of the most exciting parts of Days Of Future Past are going to be connected to this movie."

Bryan Singer also answers some of the fans main concern about which films are canon, and which he will dismiss. Spoiler Alert, he is taking into account the events of X-Men The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Both films were deeply criticized by fans and movie critics alike.

"I’m taking into account every movie – I’m not just grabbing my first two movies and First Class and smashing them together. I’m taking into account the entire universe as it’s been laid out so far on the screen, and really respecting it and trying to work with that. People took things in various directions, so there’s some clean-up. But ultimately I’m not just ignoring them either."

As a die hard fan boy of the Phoenix Saga, I hope that the cleanup he speaks of is in relationship to Ratner's interpretation of it in The Last Stand. And that we can see a true representation of it on the big screen again. After all, they rebooted Spiderman in 5 years!

Anyway, according to the director, if you want to get the latest info, stick to twitter, that's how he has been communicating about the movie and doesn't intend to stop using it. But of course we hope you follow us here or on Facebook to get the latest!

 "I’ll be using Twitter as an avenue. I think Twitter is an amazing thing. Very often something gets out there in the rumour-sphere, and people start building up an impression of something that might not be right. So what I want to do is just little by little drop out whatever information is official."

X-Men Days of Future Past is expected to be released on July 18, 2014.

DVD Review - Trick 'r Treat

Trick 'r Treat has been sitting on a shelf for a couple of years while Warners decided what to do with it. I guess they sometimes can't tell a good thing when they've seen it because Trick r' Treat happens to be one of the best horror films in years.

It's a collection of shorts loosely tied together. Various characters popped up in different segments and everything takes place in the same town. It's got ghosts, demons, and other ghoulies fit for any horror fan. The result is a wickedly funny and creepy anthology with plenty of scares.

The acting is surprisingly strong including some great performances from Dylan Baker and Brian Cox, who happens to star in my favorite segment which features the little demon you see in the picture up top. That little guy actually shows up all over the place including a rather creepy animated short that serves as the DVD releases only special feature.

The DVD release is pretty bare bones unfortunately, at least the version I was sent. It only has the animated short Season's Greetings. Surely, Warner Brothers could have done more to support this release? Apparently not. It looks and sounds great and certainly stands on its own in terms of quality.

Trick 'r Treat makes for a great Halloween watch. In fact, I would recommend a double feature with next weeks brilliant Night of the Creeps release. That would make for a fantastic night of scares and laughs.

DVD Review: Valkyrie

It's interesting to think about the effect that hype has on a person's enjoyment of a film. It seems to have gotten almost to the point of making one question their own feelings. Did I like this film because it was reviewed so poorly? Did that lower my expectations? Would my feelings toward the film be different if it had been reviewed more positively? I've mentioned that phenomena before in my reviews and again, it just might be in play with Valkyrie. At some point, as a critic, you just need to let go of the hype and admit to yourself that no mater what the general consensus on a film turns out to be, yours may be different.

The consensus on Valkyrie is that it is a terrible, awful film.

I just so happen to disagree.

Valkyrie is the story of a group of men who plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler in the hopes of saving their country. For me, it was an extremely interesting and at times tense film about a historical event I had never heard of before. Admittedly, my knowledge of World History is woefully lacking, and it is stories like the one presented here that makes me want to take another look at the past.

Sure, it's not perfect but I can't deny my enjoyment of the film. The performances were solid, although no German accents is a bit distracting at first but if you let that slide it isn't a big deal. The main cast is for the most part British and they all kept their accents intact for this. I don't know if that was a creative choice or what but there is some amazing actors in the group who I have no doubt could have pulled off the accent. Maybe it was Tom Cruise who put the kibosh on that?

That nitpick aside, there really isn't too much to complain about. The dialogue is a little weak at times and the plot seems a little thin. It made me think there was a lot of other events surrounding this that we didn't get to see. Beyond that the film for me was pretty suspenseful and entertaining. I wouldn't say edge of my seat but I was definitely captivated by what I was watching.

As far as special features go, the two-disc set is a tad light. There is a really interesting documentary of the actual events depicted in the film as well as a making of featurette. We also get two audio commentaries. Disc two is the now seemingly standard digital copy of the movie. This is something I really wish would go away. It's being used to jack up prices of DVDs and make them seem to be more of a value than they really are.

Overall, Valkyrie is an entertaining World War II drama that tells the story of some really brave individuals. While the film isn't a masterpiece, it is certainly not deserving of the negativity that seems to surround it.

Check it out for yourself. You'll enjoy it, despite your expectations.

Superman Reboot directed by The Wachowski's?

The internet is swirling with reports that Bryan Singer has dropped out of directed the next Superman film to instead concentrate on his remake of Logan's Run. This allows WB to go forward with a reboot of the franchise as well as turning it into a a trilogy. Word has it that it that an offer has gone out to The Matrix and Speed Racer directors, The Wachowski Brothers.

Not sure how I feel about this.
