Netflix Has Their Daredevil!

You might recognize Charlie Cox from Stardust or Boardwalk Empire but pretty soon he'll be known the world over as Daredevil aka Matt Murdoch, the blind lawyer of Hell's Kitchen.

The casting was made official today along with the announcement of Drew Goddard's replacement as showrunner by Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus).

I think it's an interesting choice. Hopefully, we'll see these casting announcements start to ramp up as these Netflix series get closer to production!

What do you think about the casting?

Breaking: Edgar Wright Is No Longer Directing Ant-Man

Shocking news just broke as it has been announced that Edgar Wright has left the director's chair for the upcoming Marvel film Ant-Man.

Marvel's statement:

Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on ANT-MAN due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.

This can't be good for the film.  This has been an Edgar Wright project for well, since its inception it seems and turning it over to a new director this late in the game is a little disconcerting.

I suspect we'll hear more details on the QT in a few days.

Personally, my interest in the film is now far less than it was with Wright at the helm. I guess we'll see who Marvel chooses to take over. It will be hard to match someone like Edgar Wright though.

More details to come.

Did Bryan Singer Just Drop An Apocalypse On Us?

What could this tweet mean?  Apocalypse as the villain in the next X-Men film?  An Age of Apocalypse movie??  Maybe he's just having some holiday fun and screwing with us?

An Age of Apocalypse movie would be amazing and the idea of just having Apocalypse in a film has so many exciting possibilities, not the least of which is an appearance of Archangel!

I guess we'll need to wait to find out more info. 2016 is so far...

Until then, gaze upon the glory that is Apocalypse!

Marvel and Netflix Unite for Awesomeness!

Today could be considered historic, most definitely for Netflix and Marvel, as the two embark on a massive project to bring 4 series and an epic miniseries to the streaming service.

Marvel has announced that they'll be producing series taking place in and focusing on the flawed heroes of Hell's Kitchen.  These heroes include Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and the one I am most excited about, Jessica Jones.  The mini-series will focus on The Defenders.

These series are slated to begin in 2015.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has their Star Lord!

It's Chris Pratt!  Yes.  From Parks and Rec.  Pratt beat out a list of contenders that reportedly included Zachary Levi, Lee Pace, Jim Sturgess, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to name a few.  He's an interesting pick for sure but proved he has bad ass chops with his recent turn in Zero Dark Thirty.

Marvel Releases Official Plots for Thor 2 and Iron Man 3!

At last, Marvel has dropped upon us the official synopsis's for the upcoming sequels to Thor and Iron Man.  They're relatively spoiler free so feel safe in reading on:

Iron Man 3:

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Thor:  The Dark World

Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s Thor and Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

They sound pretty intense.

Heroclix Batman No Man's Land News

I recently started playing Heroclix again and I am totally hooked!

For those of you who don't know, Heroclix is a collectible miniatures game from Neca/Wizkids featuring your favorite Marvel and DC Comics (and more recently Halo, Gears of War, Street Fighter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Trek) characters.

I got back into Heroclix back in January just as the Infinity Gauntlet event was starting. Each month one's local Heroclix venue held a tournament for Limited Edition (LE) figures for the winners. Everyone who participated received that month's gem for their Infinity Gauntlet object (the first month's participation prize). From January through July these tournaments were held once a month until the Infinity Gauntlet object was completed. This was able to be equipped to a normal figure (for a point cost) to grant it additional powers and abilities.

Finally, this Saturday there is a tournament to play for Thanos himself! This awesome colossal clix is a must for any Marvel Heroclix fan! This LE is already going for $500 on eBay! Check out the amazing sculpt below!

Why am I bringing all of this up after the fact? Well because there is going to be a similar event starting in November/December for DC Heroclix: Batman No Man's Land!

Although this event will be a little shorter (Nov/Dec - May), it already seems way more involved.

First off, there is a Utility Belt resource dial and Gas Pellet 3D object a for the first month and each month there will be another 3D object to add to the Utility Belt (Batarangs, Grapnel Gun, Flash Grenades, Re-Breather, Handcuffs, and Batman's Cowl!).

There is little know how the Utility Belt resource dial will work, but the 3D objects (like the Infinity Gauntlet gems) can be used as an object in game or combined with the Utility Belt for additional abilities. The official Wizkids press release says that the 3D objects will be used to "enhance and customize" the Utility Belt. Whether that refers to aesthetics or functionality, has yet to be seen.

A prototype image was leaked from a Wizkids Heroclix announcement slide (see below). I'm guessing that the Cowl will go in the "glass tube" on top and the belt 3D object "pockets" will fit on the sides.

Another new element announced for the Batman No Man's Land event is the ability to "tag" your gang symbol in one of 6 territories (one for each month) on a laminated No Man's Land map of Gotham City. Each month you'll be battling for control of a section of the city. The winner gets to tag their territory with their chosen gang symbol (below).

I'm not certain, but I'd imagine there will be a way to designate symbols because there are generally more than six players (at least at my venue). These lead up to a special prize at the end of month six, but what that is has yet to be revealed.

Batman No Man's Land Event Map

The LE figures include: Lock-up, Batgirl, Ultimate Clayface, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, and a Joker & Harley duo! Check out more of the info here: http://heroclix.com/nomansland/#axzz22p5Y7r5E

Also, on November 14th, Heroclix will be releasing a new DC set... you guessed it! Batman! A few details have been released so far, but each brick will consist of 9 boosters and a super booster (reminiscent of Marvel's Giant Sized X-Men set) contained vehicle Heroclix for the first time ever!

Again, there are not a whole lot of details released for the mechanics of the vehicles, but we do know that they will have different functions if they are "piloted" or "unpiloted." From the looks of the prototype pictures, the Batmobile, Batplane, and Wonder Woman's Invisible Jet are in the set.

Accompanying this regular set will be a Batman Fast Forces set (Nov. 14th) and a CounterTop display (Oct. 31st) and a Nightwing and Batgirl duo Marquee figure! Also, this set includes the introduction of the Wild C.A.T.s team ability!

Nightwing and Batgirl duo Marquee Figure

I'm extremely excited for this to start, because of my love of Batman and renewed love for Heroclix!

Amazing Spider-Man Official Synopsis!

Wonder no longer as Columbia Pictures has announced the official synopsis for their upcoming Amazing Spider-Man.  Sounds a little bit like Ultimate Spider-Man.

One of the world's most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in "The Amazing Spider-Man." Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Tech: Marvel Comics same day to Digital

Among other things today in tech Marvel came outside from the shadowy comic dungeon to announce that they are renewing their commitment to digital platforms as conduits for Marvel comics.

Now they already had apps for both Android and iOS, but they were always the odd step child, receiving slow and delayed updates. Starting in March, Marvel will be release day and date in physical stores AND on digital platforms.

So any of you that want to forgo the cellophane and new comic smell can now do so a little easier. I'd say drop the digital price a little and you got a deal Marvel.

Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. Motion Comic DVD Review

Spider-Woman isn’t the most well-known super heroine in the Marvel universe, but the motion comic Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. really sheds a new light on the character. Written by Brian Michael Bendis (Ultimate Spider-Man, House of M, and Secret Invasion) and amazing artwork by Alex Maleev, Spider-Woman delves into Jessica Drew’s recruitment into the extraterrestrial counterterrorism agency S.W.O.R.D. Her first mission is to investigate and hunt down Skrulls. The images are beautiful and give a gritty feel to the story. The voice acting is pretty good and really brings another dimension to all of the characters.

The only downside to this was the fact there were only 5 episodes. The story is very complete though, but it seems very short. I wanted to see more.

There are several very good special features on this DVD including a motion comic Music Video, the Visual History of Spider-Woman, and a Behind the scenes featurette of Marvel Knights animation. These are all very well done and make a great addition to this DVD.

Despite being short, this motion comic was very well done and had a great story about an under used Marvel character.

I give Spider-Women: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. motion comic a 6 out of 10 Skrulls!

X-Men: First Class Review

People have a tendency to cringe at the word sequel, but those people have never heard of The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, or The Dark Knight (just to name a few). It gets a bit excessive when it's the fourth (fifth if you count Wolverine) movie in a series such as The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Resident Evil: Afterlife, or Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

However, X-Men: First Class is none of these! Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Stardust) has done an amazing job of directing by far the best movie of the X-Men Franchise. I'll admit that I was skeptical at first of how I felt with the "First Class" not actually being the same as they were in the comics, but I quickly got over it. A number of "B list" X-Men debut in this movie, giving us a unique take on the story we thought we all knew. Rounding out the team lead by Professor X and Magneto are Banshee, Beast, Mystique, and Havok.

Without giving too much away, the main plot is that Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) is trying to ignite a nuclear war in the midst of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The time period is extremely convincing with the sets and the costumes. January Jones, who is no stranger to looking sexy in 60s fashion is great as Emma Frost. Michael Fassbender makes a really convincing and cool Magneto, at times he looks and acts like Sean Connery's James Bond (which could make a great case for his recent desire to take over Bond after Daniel Craig). James McAvoy really brings a young and hopeful side to Professor X.

All in all this was an amazing film telling the origin of the X-Men with new characters and some old familiar faces. My only concern is that in a summer full of superhero movies, this one might get overshadowed, which is ashame because it is one of the best.

X-Men: First Class is a 9 out of 10 Mutants!
