Here Are Your Oscar Winners!

Last night, Hollywood gathered for the Academy Awards.  It was a mostly uneventful night with few, if any, surprises.  Well, there was pizza, and selfies like the epic one above.

There was also this:

Yeah, I don't understand how that happened either.

I thought Ellen did a good job.   She kept the predictable affair funny.

As for the awards, if you haven't guessed them all, click the RAWR for the full list.  Congrats to all the winners!

Ellen DeGeneres Crashes Twitter with (Record-Setting?) Oscars Selfie!

by Kari Tervo

Trying to log into your Twitter account and you're getting the "Something Is Technically Wrong" message? That clumsy robot hasn't just screwed it up for you--Ellen DeGeneres has crashed Twitter with an Oscars mass-celebrity-selfie taken from her tablet in the theater aisle during the show! She was trying to achieve the most-retweeted photo in Twitter history.

According to downrightnow.com, Twitter has been experiencing a "likely service disruption" since shortly after the photo was posted.

You can't see it on Twitter right now, but the celebrity-studded photo features the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, and Ellen herself.
Ellen's Star-Studded Selfie, swiped from her Facebook.
Congratulations on a fun Oscars stunt, Ellen! I just wish I could tweet about it. . . :p

Golden Globe Nom Oops I Mean Oscar Nominations!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released this years Oscar nominations and they look a LOT like the Golden Globes.  I think with the exception of a nod for Judy Dench (replacing Kate Winslet apparently) they're near identical.

Some notable snubs?  Blackfish.  It's the years most talked about documentary and it is an extremely important one that is actually having a social impact.

For acting?  Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan for their respective roles in Short Term 12 and Fruitvale Station.  Both delivered such real and heartbreaking performances.  It's a real shame they didn't get any recognition from the academy.

I'm a guy who loves award shows but this list of nominees just feels lazy to me.  It's cookie cutter.  Nothing shocking.  The fact that it mirrors the Golden Globes is probably going to be hell on the ratings.  Why watch if we're just going to see the same thing?

You can click the RAWR for the complete list of nominations. The big show airs on March 2 on ABC.

Eddie Murphy Exits Academy Awards?!

Following the rather unsurprising exit of Brett Ratner, the Academy has announced today that Eddie Murphy has left the production as well.

Murphy says. "First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

I can't even imagine why Murphy would do this but whatever.  It's time for the academy to pick up the phone and call Conan.

Academy Boots Ratner (or did he quit?)!

Here is an official statement from the Academy regarding Brett Rater:

Beverly Hills, CA – This morning, Brett Ratner submitted his resignation as a producer of the 84th annual Academy Awards to Academy President Tom Sherak. Ratner then issued an open letter to the entertainment industry in which he explained his decision.

"He did the right thing for the Academy and for himself," Sherak said. "Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent."

What do you think? Did they fire him and are they allowing Ratner to save face after this debacle?  Personally, I don't think he should ever have been a part of the production to begin with but that's neither here nor there.  Glad to see he's gone though.  But seriously, is anyone surprised?

And the Oscar Host Is...

It's not 100% just yet but it's pretty likely that the next host of the Academy Awards will be Eddie Murphy.

It's an interesting choice that I can get behind.

I'm still not sold on this whole putting Brett Ratner in charge of the show thing though.

The Dark Knight Returns

One of the best films of the year, The Dark Knight, returns to IMAX theaters around the country today. Head out and experience this brilliant movie again or for the first time, or fourth, or tenth.

Celebrate Heath Ledger's nomination or show support for a film that should have received more recognition in terms of Oscar nominations (Picture and Director).

Who Might Be The Next Oscar Host??

Oh yeah. That's right. Word has it that the Academy is on the prowl for Justin Timberlake to host as a way to increase the show's rapidly sinking ratings. They also seem to have contacted Tina Fey to see how interested she may be in hosting.

I didn't catch Justin hosting the Espy's but I have heard that he did quite well. I'm not sure he is quite ready for Oscar hosting duties. I'd much rather see Tina Fey run the show.

Maybe it will end up being a co-hosting gig?

I guess we'll find out soon.

Yay Oscar!

It's official!

Jon Stewart has been chosen to host the 80th Academy Awards airing in March of next year. It will be his second time hosting the show. His first, 2006, was the second lowest rated Oscars. Not to put blame on Jon as I thought he did a terrific job. Certainly one of the better hosts in recent years. Still not sure what they were thinking by asking Chris Rock to host.
Last years telecast was brilliantly hosted by Ellen DeGeneres and she barely pulled in more than when Jon hosted.
Should be good either way...
Now we just need some movies worthy of the awards to come out...
