31 Days of Scream-O-Ween! - Cockneys vs. Zombies

By Adam Ruhl

Today’s film is the newest of all the Scream Factory offerings we’re reviewing and it’s also the most British, East London British to be precise. Cockneys vs. Zombies is the greatest English Horror-Comedy zombie movie since Shaun of the Dead and manages to completely distinguish itself from similar films. I first saw it a year ago at Fantastic Fest 2012 where it was a festival darling and now Scream Factory has given it the royal treatment and brought it to America.

Blu-ray Review: American Horror Story - Asylum

Being a horror fan, American Horror Story should be just what the doctor ordered.  Well, the first season had a lot of highs, but more than enough lows, and the ending just left me a little underwhelmed.

So it was only with half hopes that Season Two would amount to anything more.  Thankfully, I was wrong.  Yes it is stilled riddled with cliches but it uses them to its advantage.

This season brings an entirely different story line but a lot of the same actors.  Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, and Zachary Quinto are all back and are joined by newcomers Sarah Paulson and James Cromwell, among others.

This time the setting takes us to Briarcliff Home for the Criminally Insane, or the titular Asylum and all matter of craziness ensues.

In the interest of spoilers and keeping things short I won't reveal any of the details suffice it to say, it's full of great scares and further showcases the excellent talents of its cast.  Asylum is in every way better than the preceding season (and Coven, season 3, is looking to be even better than this one).

The blu-ray set collects all 13 episodes from the 17-time Emmy nominated second season and some great behind the scenes features.

Wonderfully creepy, brilliantly acted, and deliciously scary, American Horror Story: Asylum is the perfect way to spend some cold fall nights.    Ryan Murphy has really created a great show here and he is giving his cast such great material here.   Jessica Lange is a show stealer in every season and she is in rare form here.

Horror fans should eat this show right up and don't worry if you haven't seen the first season.  They're all independent of each other (at least so far) so you don't need to know what came before to enjoy this season.

American Horror Story: Asylum is available now!

9/10 Nuns!

31 Days of Scream-O-Ween! - Psycho 3

By David Massey

For those of you that thought making a sequel to ‘Psycho’ was a disastrous, shark-jumping moment in cinema history, you ain’t seen nothing’ yet. On Valentine’s Day, 1986, first-time director, Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates himself), released ‘Psycho 3’ and, at the time, no one cared. It’s a shame because, unlike ‘Psycho 2’ – which spent a lot of time and energy reproducing and imitating Hitchcock - this is a totally new and much darker take on a scenario that we already know quite well. Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-ray puts it all in perspective and garnishes the film with a hefty ensemble of bizarre features.

Dom Kennedy's Get Home Safely Review

The South Central rapper released his second studio album titled 'Get Home Safely' on October 15th, after the success of his last project, the street classic 'Yellow Album', as well as touring and expanding his OPM movement. Kennedy also stated that if you've never been introduced to his music prior to this album, it's a great way to become familiar with his repertoire.

31 Days of Scream-O-Ween! - Psycho 2

By David Massey

‘Blasphemy’ must have been the first word that came to mind for any discerning cinema-goer when Universal announced they were making a sequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s incomparable ‘Psycho’. Now, 30-some-odd years later, the film is little more than a blip lost in the blur of the 1980’s horror extravaganza. It’s easy to forget that ‘Psycho 2’ was one of the most successful summer blockbusters of 1983 (opening the same weekend as ‘Return of the Jedi’) and Scream Factory’s Blu-ray Collector’s Edition is here to remind us why this ambitious thriller deserves to be remembered.

DVD Review: Stuck In Love

Stuck In Love is a sweet drama about a family of writers, each of whom is coping with a different stage of love. Bill (Greg Kinnear) is a divorced man who still loves his ex-wife, Erica (Jennifer Connelly), and believes she’ll come back to him. His son, Rusty (Nat Wolff), is at the beginning stages of love with Kate (Liana Liberato). And his daughter, Samantha (Lily Collins), is determined to not fall in love.

The film introduces us to the three writers in three short scenes, one after the other. The film opens with a high school classroom scene, in which Rusty says in voice over, “I remember that it hurt – looking at her hurt.” And that line appears on the screen. We then meet Samantha, who is speaking to a man who is off camera, and her first words also appear on screen: “I never enjoy anything. I’m always waiting for whatever’s next.” And we hear the sound of someone typing those lines on a computer. And then we’re introduced to Bill, who is sneaking around outside his wife’s new home. He looks in through a window, sees her arguing with her new man, and smiles. We get some voice over, and the first several words appear on screen: “As I stood there staring through the window into my ex-wife’s new life…

DVD Review: Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story

A title card at the beginning of Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story tells us, “He was once the most famous children’s book author in America.” After a brief pause (during which you may try to recall the titles of his books), another card says, “Then he disappeared.” An intriguing opening, to be sure.

And then we meet Tomi Ungerer – white hair, glasses, young eyes – and he lights a cigarette. He says, “I have the full respect of a piece of white paper, which I then shall rape with my drawing or my writing.” Yes, he is immediately likeable, and quite personable. He has such joy when talking about creating. You can see it in his eyes, hear it in his voice. (But then he talks about being uncomfortable in his chair while being interviewed, and the light in his eyes interestingly dims.)

The centerpiece of this film is an interview with Tomi Ungerer, but the film also interestingly mixes in  animation  based on Ungerer’s work. And there are other interviews, with folks such as Maurice Sendak (author of Where The Wild Things Are, who says he isn’t as crazy or as great as Ungerer), Therese Willer (curator of the Tomi Ungerer Museum), Michael Patrick Hearn (children’s literature scholar), Jules Feiffer (Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist) and Steven Heller (author and critic).

31 Days of Scream-O-Ween! - They Live

By Adam Ruhl

I’m a huge John Carpenter fan; I make no secret of that fact. They Live holds a very special place in my heart. This is one of the most creative science fiction/horror movies of the 80’s, possibly of all time. John Carpenter was at the top of his game when he made They Live, but like many of his better films the reception was soft on release and its reputation had to grow over time. Grow it has and it is now a cinema classic. In fact, this Collector’s Edition of John Carpenter’s They Live was what first turned me on to Scream Factory and I saw the serious treatment they were willing to give their titles.

Film Review - @PolariFest AGLIFF "Interior. Leather Bar."

By David Massey

In 2013, James Franco sets the gold standard for self-indulgent Auteur and on a scale that rivals even Andy Warhol. ‘Interior. Leather Bar.’ (Co-Directed with Travis Mathews) is just one of many Franco-projects that I’ve found myself viewing this past year (see also: ‘Child of God’, ‘This is the End’, ‘Oz The Great and Powerful’, ‘Lovelace’, ‘Maladies’, ‘Tar’, ‘Spring Breakers’, ‘The Iceman’ - and those are just the ones I managed to catch at various festivals). Looking forward to 2014, the man has an entire lifetime of projects (for some actor/directors) in varying stages of production. My take on his absolutely madding and eclectic trajectory; Franco has found a new type of celebrity excess and, be it a creative excess or not, I can’t really purport its value to anyone except Franco himself. The films vary from insightful to entertaining, slow & introspective to over-the-top and self-aware. There is not a solid through-line to this career but there is no denying that Franco has an unquenchable thirst for experience and you gotta love him just a bit for sharing it with us.
